And just to keep everyone updated: the phenomenal fourteenth issue is on sale from Monday, featuring a brilliant cover by the even more brilliant Bryan Talbot (who you can find more from inside), Rupert the Bear, The Eagle (celebrating its sixtieth anniversary this April) and much, much more!

A classic character, I agree. I used to get the annuals every year as a kid, from my aunt, who was a big fan of the little bear.

Issue 14 is one of the best we've produced - but wait until the NEXT one. We're hoping to have a couple of amazing exclusives...but that's all I can tell you right now...

er...plan? What is this word 'plan'...? Shocked

We're usually working a little ahead, and we've enough material for about a year's worth of issues, but schedules change right up until the week before it goes to print, pretty much. We've a lot of stuff stockpiled since we dropped back the page count.

Hopefully Nostalgia & Comics will have it on Thurs... or maybe Tues after Easter, depending when I can get there.

No subscription necessary, just PM me. And I understand your feelings about FP. I far preferred it when they had just the one cosy, welcoming little shop in Denmark Street, round the corner from Paradise Alley...

Crikey 14

Post by alanultron5 on Sat May 01, 2010 10:48 am

Thanks Tony for Crikey 14. Very much enjoyed `Perishers` piece! I always enjoyed `Boots` tussles with the `Spacehopper` in the early 1970s. Fave `Perisher` scene was Fred beetle and his caterpillar mate coming across a Bonfire night Rocket. Caterpillar (who amazingly `can` read!) says "It Sez` Light the Blue Touch Paper an' Retire" A puzzled Fred Bettle replies "Retire!? But we've Never `Ad Jobs!"

Paul Ware's letter regarding `Missing Link/Johnny Future` was rough on the `Nutty Notions` piece which only had a paragraph or so to describe it! Saying that, I do fondly recall the Johnny Future section and found it innovative at times! The 1969 Fantastic annual strip was superb in my view Disastro bieng a quite unique bieng!

The beetle and the caterpillar were definitely two of the better characters in a strip full of good characters. I used to look forward to their inevitably being lured into the schemes of the Teutonic tortoise, Adolph Kilroy...

Yes! It was my favourite part of the strip too! Always ended in failure! Could I nominate "Granny Cupp and her Flying Saucer" as a `Nutty Notion` please? I always thought it a pretty `far-out` concept! Very Happy

Crikey 14

Post by alanultron5 on Fri May 07, 2010 3:26 pm

Very much enjoyed the `Perishers` article in Crikey 14 bieng as I too am a fan! Only one thing missing-that final panel (as described by Tony) where they walk off into the sunset! I missed that at the time and would hope to catch up on it someday. Did you know the `Sun` tried their own `Perrishers` style strip in the mid 70s I think? Can't recall the title, but it was a terrible `rip-off` of the original. It was replaced by `Hagar the Horrible`

Was there a single Mirror strip the Sun didn't try to rip off? Which came first, 'Striker' or 'Scorer'? 'Badlands' or 'A Man Called Horace'?

Didn't know of a Perishers rip-off -- tough act to imitate.

Yes! It was when the Sun was `ripping off` many of the Daily Mirrors best cartoon strips! I wish I could recall the title of Sun's `Perishers` clone-but can't! It was pretty dismal and was replaced by `Hagar the Horrible`

I wouldn't describe myself as a "fan" of The Perishers, or Rupert for that matter but I remember reading both as a kid so I found the articles on the history of these strips fascinating to read.
It jogged my memory about those strips where Wellington would go to the beach and speak to the crabs. I remember finding them pretty baffling as a kid ! Very Happy

Picked up a copy of The Daily Mirror today and it seems The Perishers are back in there again.

Reprints by the looks of it. Not sure how long they have been running them for.

I wonder if Jane will be next ? Surprised

They started reprinting the Perishers strips some months ago, apparently due to popular demand. Now, if only the BBC would reshow the cartoon...

There something that's just wrong about The Mirror without The Perishers so I'm glad it's back.

Maybe the penny will drop with The Sun about George and Lynne too ? Wink
