Vampires in Venice!
Was anybody else dissapointed that they just had to be aliens and couldn't just be "real" vampires?
Also it seemed like the story was pretty jumpy in places to me. There's nothing wrong with compression and a quick pace but it seemed just a tad too much here... like it'd been planned as a two parter but then had to be crammed into one!
Oh and the Library Card was hilarious!

The Llibrary card was great, but I liked the whole episode a lot more than I thought I would (I wasn't impressed with Toby Whitehouse's last script at all). OK, the vampires weren't vampires but seafood from outer space, but all the traditional vampire story ingredients were there (vampire girls in floaty dresses, the obligatory mirror scene, the castle...) and the Doctor's sheer joy at the prospect of vampires was great! And I'm really warming to Rory.

I did wonder what the citizens of Venice were supposed to do about the horde of killer fish left in the canals. Still, with no females I guess they'd have died out eventually...Lucy McGough wrote:Yes, it was

Maybe they die if they can't find a mate within their breeding season, or something.

I hope their breeding season isn't too long, then. Though since 'the silence' seems to have caught up with Venice at the end anyway, it may be a moot point.Lucy McGough wrote:Maybe they die if they can't find a mate within their breeding season, or something.

Lots of plot holes have been pointed out on GB and OUTPOST SKARO. Sparacus says he's planning to rewrite the episode on his blog to over come these. Heaven help us.

One minute vamps cant be in sunlight the next they are fine.
What happened to the tidal wave caused by the earthquake
How was the doc able to join in a conversation between the two companions when he wasn't there for the first part

1) The Vampire girls were OK in sunlight for short periods or when covered up. Isabella wasn't, presumably because she was still only partly transformed.Hourglass wrote:One minute vamps cant be in sunlight the next they are fine.

2) It didn't happen, since the Doctor stopped the process before it got any worse.
3) Not sure what this one refers to...

It's getting there. Just no more Victory's to destroy my confidence, please. Starting to love Smithy, though, which helps. What a change to have a likeable, endearing Doctor again!

Best Doctor since McGann. Just in case they intend to do a multi-Doctor story for 2013, I might write in and suggest that they start work on the waxwork replica of David Tennant now...codywillis1 wrote:tony ingram wrote:This series starting to work for you now, Cody?codywillis1 wrote:Another highly enjoyable ep. Enjoyable but the poorest so far, the main issue, the vampires being Fish'pires! If they'd been more Vampire like Aliens they would have been better!

I imagine that, being seafood, these particular vamps would have an allergy to garlic butter...

Re: Vampires in Venice!
I thought it was quite a clever move to make the vampires fish. Suitable for Venice. And it works! Sharp teeth, aversion to sunlight, draining the liquid from their victims... very clever.

I agree. Though I'd still like to know how the giant mother fish managed to be wearing real clothes (which she took off) when her human shape was an illusion...

Re: Vampires in Venice!
She was shedding an outer layer of tough scales to expose her soft inner body, to make it easier for her children to eat her. Everyone on Saturnyne can do it. The perception filter meant that the Doctor's brain interpreted it as her removing clothing.

Re: Vampires in Venice!
Not my own invention. I nicked it from someone on GB.
(Of course, in real life I am a time-space traveller who had been to Saturnyne frequently. Lovely coral architecture, and the seaweed gardens of the Thousand Lakes are stunning, but the cuisine is a bit monotonous - mostly krill-based.)

I like a bit of seafood. I take it this was before the place was devastated by strange fluctuations in space?

Re: Vampires in Venice!
Oh yes. Afterwards it's just rubbish. The radiation killed off the singing seaweed flowers, and the earthquakes destroyed the Coral Palace of the Eternal Empress. Wasn't really much left to make visiting worth your while, unless you're fond of squid-sharks with teeth like razors. Can't say I am, but at least they did a decent job of disposing of the corpses.

I hate it when a resort you've been going to for years goes downhill. It was the same with Dymchurch caravan park after the whelk stall closed.
