The Hungry Earth
So guys what did you make of this weeks outing? Sadly for me it just was a massive let down. I couldnt even bear to watch the whole ep.

Haven't seen it yet, but from what I've heard, not looking forward to it.

Seen it.
Awful.
I think I'll skip next weeks. It was tensionless, dull, boring and a ripoff of god knows how many other stories even before the NooPoo Silurians turned up. Then it just turned to farce. Laughably bad.

Re: The Hungry Earth
Having not seen the original silurians i could only judge them as a "new" monster and i thought they were pretty good... though seemed familiar, like something from another show i watched as a kid such as Babylon 5, X-files, Space Precinct etc.
Maybe the grave robbery angle should have been played up a bit more, would have made it more spooky.
Oh and it could have been set in Victorian times and the drilling could have just been mining.

Not only did it contradict the Silurians but Inferno as well. It is clearly shown in Inferno digging beneath the earths crush causes a massive disaster which wipes out earth.

Re: The Hungry Earth
I quite liked the story-but I have real problems with the new look Silurians, which really let it down. Yes, it's perfectly plausible that there are other species of Silurian, but this lot just look too human! A subterranean reptile would not have human looking eyes and nose. And boobs! Reptiles do not have mammary glands, for pity's sake! Very poor, not a patch on the originals and far too reminiscent of every other alien race from Star Trek (J'em Hadar, anyone?)
And 'Homo Reptilia' is utter nonsense as a classification. 'Homo' relates specifically to humans, not lizards.
Amy about to be dissected had me on the edge of my seat, though.

A shame really when the original design work looked so good
Why oh why did Moffat give in to Chibnalls demands for a more human look.

At least he doesnt write over their work and try pass off most of it as his own. And the bits Moff does do don't feel as intrusive.

Re: The Hungry Earth
That design does actually look quite good, with anamatronics it could have been even better than the old stiff obviously-a-mask originals (i youtube'd). Still i didn't think the episode was very bad. And at least they're not as crap as the new Daleks!
Still... would have been better in Victorian times XD. Imagine the exhumation of a coffin by lantern-light, to reveal the bottom has been ripped out and the body taken (for dissection to discover the human's weaknesses, of course). Kidnapping of live people for the same reason... and miners, chipping away at the rock in flickering candle-light, coming across clean-cut tunnels that they didn't dig... the evening roll-call constantly turning up missing miners from a certain section of the mine which begins to get a "haunted" reputation.

I wonder if Moff wrote the doctor/silurian confrontation. It seemed a lot more subtle than what I'd have expected from Chibnall.

Re: The Hungry Earth
Ah, well there's the problem; people are claiming the ratings have slumped dramatically this year, principally it seems because the HD transmission, the Sunday repeat, Sky+ and iplayer don't get counted in the overnights. In terms of time shifted ratings, this series is getting higher figures than Tennant's last on average, but the naysayers are pointing to the overnights as proof that people are switching off. Iplayer doesn't get counted at all.Lucy McGough wrote:Get lost, Ingram

Me too, but this wasn't a very good episode for scientific credibility. It wasn't even clearly established why they were drilling in the first place. And what was all that nonsense about bio-engineered soil that could detect bio-rhythms and suck people in, normally found on "jungle planets"? Poppycock!

Apparently, about 15 minutes was cut from the episode. Possibly, it would have been clearer if it had run to the full hour.Lucy McGough wrote:Me too, but this wasn't a very good episode for scientific credibility. Oh, and another thing - the original Silurians had frickin' DEATH RAYS on their heads that could make walls disappear and reappear as if by magic.
How scientifically credible is that?

Given the level of extras on the new series DVD releases, you'll be lucky. They can't even be bothered to include the full versions of Doctor Who Confidential...Lucy McGough wrote:Go and find me one then

Re: The Hungry Earth
As I have no idea how to start one of these I'll have to start here - I only saw the last bit so bear with me. Wasn't it great last night when that guy got zapped? I don't even know his name! I didn't understand why the Doctor was so insistent for the girl (nice legs) to remember him as he was a boring character - I'd have been telling her to forget him! And what was Dr Connors' wife doing in there??!!
It CRAP guys!!!

A fair and balanced review as always.
I liked Rory. Poor old Rory. But I'm sure he'll be back-that engagement ring was left in the TARDIS for a reason...

Re: The Hungry Earth
Soz guys my aunt died on friday so I had to go to lester to help her family out and wont be back till monday/tuesday so have limited access to net.
I agree with Glenn, this was absolutely rubbish. I pretty much expect Barry Letts to rise from his grave and haunt Chibnall until he learns how to write good doctor who.
Only part I liked was Rorys death and that was because it was blatantly written by the Moff. You could simply tell by the tone and languae used.
And the voice over...facepalm or what, and the so called epic neociations came down to some stupid women being a greedy pig and the silurians saying "we'll give you our tech", come on!!!!!!
None of the mysteries of the first ep were explained either. Oh and another thing, I'm bloody sure the doctor would not befriend another doctor who just disected a man whilst AWAKE!!!!!!
Worst episodes since RTD left.

Tony if I had been held hostage and dissected whilst alive, and you come along and rescue me and then talk to my capture I'd be curtious enough to warn you you'd likely be dissected.
Chris Chibnall is worse than Pip and Jane Barker.

I make no apology, guys - but I like GOOD stuff. It's not my fault the series can't find a decent writer. As I've said before - the character and idea of 'Dr Who' is a brilliant one...but this is rubbish...and the Doctor STILL looks like the hero in Terrahawks - and how bad was that??!!
Re: The Hungry Earth
What's good and bad, in drama, is a very suybective thing. I suffered through five years of drivel which everyone kept saying was the best Doctor Who had ever been-this series is a welcome relief, for me. At least Matt Smith is playing the Doctor as an alien, which is something Tennant seemed to forget about for much of the time.GBF wrote:I make no apology, guys - but I like GOOD stuff. I've often said this, the concept of Doctor who is simply brilliant but has never reached its full potential as its mismanaged constantly by the BBC.

Re: The Hungry Earth
I don't think that had anything to do with the budget-it was more to do with the technology available at the time (or rather, not available at the time). You need to look at TV from that era in context. Comparing it to what would have been around even three or four years later isn't really fair.Hourglass wrote:Plots are great mate but it lacked a decent budget to make it properly furnished eg. giant rat looks crap.
