Really liked this episode, though I suspect it will come in for some criticism; kids being disintegrated by scary OAPs? Love it... Razz

Yes, yes your right, it did have a very "mind Robber" feel to it. But didn't the master of "the land of fiction" die at the end of that story?

Doh! I missed it again! I must have had something better to do...so trivial, I can't remember! Anyway - interesting to see that little plaque above telling us (in very nice English it must be said) that this TARDIS was constructed in 1963. To me, it would have been all the more intriguing for it to have been made in say, 1492, or some other date in history. But then again, JFK was shot that weekend so maybe I missed something else!!!

I suspect that they're using the Gallifreyan calendar, so 1963 may well not be our 1963. Logically, Gallifrey would have that date at some point, too-it was probably 1963 RE (Rassillonian Era) rather than 1963 AD. Cool

The astronauts who went to the moon all changed upon their return - and who wouldn't. I've never read anything about damaging the spine. The only 'direct' casualty was probably Jim Irwin, who flew on Apollo 15 and was the eighth man to walk on the moon. Apparently he suffered heart problems whilst ON the moon - minor at that, but it was touch and go he would survive the trip home. He was later plagued with heart problems ( I think he had four hearts attacks following his return). He died, surprisingly from a heart attack in 1990 - the first moonwalker to die. The first man to die who flown to the moon was Jack Swigert, Command Module Pilot on Apollo 13. He died in 1982 from cancer aged 50.

I'll sort out the book for you - you don't have to pay. The reason the yanks stopped going to the moon is because they only went there because those pesky Rooskies were going to beat them to it. And, it has been revealed since the 'wall' came down, the Soviet Union weren't going anytime soon and used it as a political way of bankrupting America. Don't forget, Viet Nam was raging at the same time, costing the tax payer $350 BILLION. The Mercury, Gemini, Apollo program cost a mere $25 BILLION. That's a serious amount of dosh!

Charlie Duke of Apollo 16 (whom I had the pleasure of interviewing a few years ago) told me that if the political will had been there, and the money, the USA would have been on MARS by 1985. And he would have gone on a mission. NASA was ready. The men were ready, the Saturn V rockets were on order and then the gravitational pull of Venus (always ready!) would be used to 'sling shot' the Mars capsule to that planet. So - the first men (and women) to Mars (whenever they go) will also be the first people to Venus...staggering, mind blowing stuff!!

It's going to take the Chinese confirming their plans to land on the moon around 1018 (not long away!). Then watch the yanks move! As a nation, the US needs to be behind before they do something. To their credit, they don't like being second - unlike GB, they want to win, not 'take part'. When the Chinese make their announcement, we'll see a joint effort from US/Russia to the moon if only because the yanks don't have a launch vehicle! The shuttle era ends in a couple of missions. Put another way - the nation that put men on the moon 40 years ago, can't get into space without the help of an old enemy! Moreover, the nation that put the first MAN into space, does not now exist! I find that incredible if not outrageous!!

Post by GBF Sun May 16, 2010 3:53 pm

A trip to Mars is interesting. The command module would probably take 12 astronauts/scientists to Mars. Buzz Aldrin has proposed an ingenious plan for fuel consumption. As you may know Apollo used a lot of fuel and all the components of the vehicle were only used once. With a Mars flight it would be a lot different. Aldrin proposed a 'space taxi' system. In short: a major booster to get the crew and CM into Earth orbit. Blast off to Venus (lots of fuel), when at Venus, go into a long, arc around the planet, take photos, do some experiments etc, as the spacecraft picks up speed (using Venus' gravity) and gets 'thrown' to where Mars will be in about 3 months. As the spacecraft approaches Mars, use the remaining fuel to slow the vehicle down enough to be 'captured' by Mars' gravity, but not attain orbit. As the vehicle is now stuck in a similar long arc above Mars, crew members (probably three groups of three) go down to different areas of Mars and continue their mission on the ground, setting up bases etc. The remaining three astronauts aboard the vehicle and the vehicle itself are 'thrown' back to Earth. When they get there, more astronauts fly up to the vehicle and get thrown back to Mars. When they arrive, the first lot come back up and the others go down. This is why the missions will not need a lot of fuel. That's the simple explanation - how they actually do it - well, I have no idea..! Amy's Choice 939152
