Interesting. I wasn't surprised by River's true identity (it's been obvious for weeks) but a great episode all the same, I thought. Anyone else?

Not sure I liked the "nice" Sontaran or a Silurian apparently living fairly openly in the middle of London(!). It was starting to reek a bit of last year's awful series ending where all the baddies show up and then run away because they are told to. However it got better.

I'll have to find a way of watching it on the other side of the world now, mind you. They ought to do something with iPlayer where you can "sign up" from an address in the UK using your national insurance number or something and then use it from anywhere in the world if you log in.

Over blown nonsense that has little to do with Who and more to do with Star Wars, yet entertaining nonsense regardless.

I rather liked the Sherlock Holmes lesbo Silurian and her sword wielding maid/lover lol. Would have liked to have seen that situation/story be set up. Shame we didn't get to have THAT Silurian story last year instead of the one we did get!

I thought 'Star Wars', too-but I liked it. To me, it gives the Who universe a feeling of being bigger, of having more scope, and the inclusion of characters like the Victorian lizard lady adventurer make it clear the whole universe doesn't revolve around the Doctor all the time. From some of the stories we got under Davies' tenure, you'd think the Doctor was the only one who ever did anything...

Yep - have to say - that was excellent and have voted so. I just watched it on iplayer and will watch it again. I was so glad curly came back! There's something about that woman...and I realise what it is now. One day I'll tell you!

Why is the Doctor not on until the autumn?

They announced some months ago that this would be a split series, with seven episodes in the Spring and six in the Autumn. There's a lot of speculation about it, but the most probable theory seems to be that this is part of a move to change the regular time slot back to Autumn/Winter, where it traditionally sat and where it tends to get higher viewing figures (early evening shows in the Summer lose a lot of casuual viewers in good weather and also tend to conflict with the major sports fixtures). Their latest announcement was that another 14 episodes of Who with Matt Smith have been commissioned and 'a large chunk' of them will be shown next year: some people are panicking over that, but I'm guessing it'll mean a return to the 70s format of a series starting in the late Autumn and carrying over into the next Spring. That would make sense, since the 50th Anniversary falls on a Saturday in November 2013.

really enjoyed it, there was maybe a few slight problems that are very very minor, but i still found it most excellent.

The only question remaning is where the name "River Song" comes from. My money is on it being a reference to the final episode of the series which will be at the fire that inspired Deep Purple's "Smoke on the water".

We were told where the name comes from-it's a mistranslation of Melody Pond which Lorna perpetrated when she was weaving the prayer leaf, since her people have no word for 'Pond' as 'the only water in the forest is the river'. She takes her name from the prayer leaf.

Presumably they don't know what a melody is either.

I think it's more likely that Moffat thought Amy naming her child 'Song Pond' would be a little odd. Maybe the people of the Gamma Forests don't have individual words to differentiate things like melody, just the one word 'Song' which relates to the whole concept. Some Earth cultures do the same.

If Moffat thought Amy naming her sprog 'Song Pond' was odd...why did he not think the name 'Pond' was odd in the first place? Then again - he's called 'Moffat' so I guess I've just answered my own question...
