If you're all planning to print this tome out - you must be mad! It'll cost you a fortune in ink...so - good luck!!
The Crikey! Special ad on You Tube has had 72 hits in 24 hours. Last week I secretly launched a Crikey! 'Tester' on the server - and took 119 hits in TWELVE hours - that's WITHOUT telling anyone! And don't forget Super-Spies 2 (60 pages unless i find some more) is about to be launched digitally too - and it's only £1.99! Watch the Crikey! website for announcements any minute...

Forgot to say: for those who want some sort of physical product, the issue will also be available on disc (though there'll be a small postage cost, obviously).

I really want the disc Tony, can you put also Crikey SS-2 in it? Wink

Btw, I have received the two CR packets, the second one was almost....disintegrated, but not because it wasn't well packed, I imagine it had some troubles during the transit! Shocked Hopefully there won't be missing issues, I haven't checked as of now!

Damaged? Badly? Had it gotten wet or something? If you let me know what's damaged I may have other copies...

No, not wet, simply the outside envelope was completely destroyed and the inside bag was torn apart but the copies seem fine!

That's bizarre. I had a parcel turn up like that at Christmas (or rather, about a week after Christmas, which was irritating in itself) but it had been wrapped in a Royal Mail plastic bag with a note of apology attached...

In fact the post office front man slightly apologized for that when givin' me the destroyed envelope! Razz
I'll let you know in pm any comments about the issues, as promised!

To return on topic, I confirm that I am interested in Crikey Special in disc form (with the long awaited Super-Spies 2 included, if possible)! Wink
Just noticed that the youtube ad is at 153 hits now, included mine!!

I see it says 8 free pages there... but any attempt to access the ebook gives either a "access denied" message (when clicking the image) or "please enter password" (when clicking on "launch this myebook now!"). Was there even supposed to be any sample pages, or is that a bug? Also, there's posts on Comics UK saying that at least two people bought the magazine but hasn't received the password.

Sounds like a bug, it's worked for others (I tried it myself as a tester from a friend's PC). We'll get it looked into, thanks Digi...

Re: Crikey! We've Gone Digital!

Post by Phil Friel on Sun Jul 31, 2011 9:39 pm

Fantastic news! The YouTube video is at 169 views now. Doing well.

I'm delighted to see Crikey! come back in digital form. A couple of years ago I wouldn't have been impressed at all about a move to digital (I was a real Luddite), and I didn't regard electronic publications as "real" magazines at all. They have no physical form, they're ephemeral, you can't hold it in your hands. But since I got my Kindle for Christmas, I've definitely warmed to the digital format a lot.

I've now come to realize that the important thing is the material that you're reading, which is exactly the same in both digital and paper format. Sure, I still would prefer a printed version of anything, if I HAD to choose (old collector obsessions die hard). But I'd now be more than happy with digital editions of any magazines, particularly in the case (as with Crikey!) that there can no longer be a print version. There are so many old favourite magazines and fanzines that I miss greatly and wish had hung around in digital format rather than disappear off into the dustbin of history...

But look at it like this: in the current climate, the print version of Crikey! just wasn't going to continue at all. So it's either no Crikey! at all or a digital Crikey! No there's choice at all there, then. Digital it is. And digital also has a few benefits over a printed version (from the reader's perspective), the most important being that every issue can be in glorious colour, and they're much easier to store if space is tight.

So my verdict on Crikey! going digital is "The future looks bright and shiny. BRING IT ON!!"

OK, there appears to have been a glitch with the site but it now appears to be working OK. If anyone still has a problem, PM or email GBF and he'll give you a code which will sort it! Very Happy

Right, sorted. Basic problem: MyEbook. Therefore, the Crikey! Special is now up at http://www.yudu.com/search?query=Crikey! instead.

It's there, it's accessible, no codes are needed, there are six free pages to view, and it's brilliant.

OK, ordered the new issue.

On the minus side, I'm finding reading the magazine online via the web browser very fiddly. To download it onto my laptop, it wants me to run an executable file which I'm not keen on.

On the plus side, so much to read that I can't decide where to start !
Planet of the Apes, Death's Head, ABC Warriors, plus the first comic I ever read as a kid - Pippin in Playland ! Amazed that I'm not the only person in Britain who rememembers that !
Very Happy

Finished it. A great read. Smile

I got used to the "digital" format in the end.
A couple of nit picks. Was the "Lion" article (page 129) the end of the issue ? Seemed odd not to have a back cover.
Also in an online magazine it doesn't really work to have an article interrupted by something else, like the Mind Wars page in the middle of the Star Lord article. It means that you're in the middle of reading an article only to turn the "page" and find the start of a different one.

I particularly enjoyed the 80s articles, Super Naturals, Action Force and the like. I'd never really appreciated before how the current state of the UK market, where it's mostly licenced titles, can be traced back to the huge success of Transformers comic back in the 80s.

Valid criticisms, noted and logged; I hadn't even thought about a back cover!

Yes, the licenced market really seems to have taken off with the Transformers craze (oddly, the earlier Masters of the Universe seems to have not been picked up on as a potential source of comics revenue at first). Thundercats was another big hit as I recall, and later The Real Ghostbusters.

I do have a couple of things -that while pretty large- I am putting into a format where - if wanted- they could be run a seperate small bits as /when needed; sort of in seriel form I suppose! I'm doing the second one now - the first is complete!

I still have my "Moon Madness" which is pretty small - plus a tribute to the 1966-67 `Sparky`character "Willie the Woeful Wizard"
