We're Doooomed! Oh, wait: we're not...
Interesting news from Digital Spy on the future of Doctor Who; it seems the future is significantly less bleak than some people believed!

All bodes well for the fiftieth, doesn't it? Particularly since Matt Smith confirmed in an interview on the same day that he's going to be on board for 2013 and has already signed for 13 episodes and a Christmas special in 2012, and that Karen and Arthur are back next year too!codywillis1 wrote:Well, good. UK Ratings for the first half of the season have held up extremely well-apart from the drop between eps 1 & 2. In fact, for a show heading into the summer months it actually increased its % of the UK audience!

Indeed! Also- US interest seems good! I have just read the `previews` of the final six stories in the latest DWM and while previews always make stories seem better than they turn out to actually be- there really does seem (Except for the `Hitler` one) a really strong set of episodes on the way!
I'm afraid I might not bother with the `Hitler` ep myself-as I just don't believe in the show going into that area! I've never watched the Churchill/Daleks one-and never will! Just my personal hangup regarding semi -recent real life historical characters.
But! the rest of the season is certainly looking like a winner- we'll see how it pans out when we all start reviewing!

I'm deliberately not reading previews and trying to avoid spoilers, myself.
I'm curious, Alan-do you have a similar problem with comics using real life individuals like Hitler and Churchill?

Thankfully, DWM doesn't go into `spoiler` territory deeply, they just give a `flavour` of the stories!
I don't mind characterisations in comics so much - though I never ever liked the `Jingoistic` strips like `Captain Hurricane` I certainly rate `Charlie's War` very highly!
In Television I just steer away from it Tony! I can't judge if its right or wrong to feature characters like Hitler/Stalin/Churchill in things like Dr Who. I personally, won't watch them, but that's me!
I dare say i'm on my own in that viewpoint, but we all have our `ways`

I kind of agree about the whole Hitler thing. He shouldn't be made into a quasi-fictional figure of fun. Hitler is not Lex Luthor or Davros. Hitler was a real person who did terrible things. The only way the Doctor should treat him is to stare at him with cold disgust and then leave the room as quickly as possible. But the title of the episode treats Hitler like a joke.

Thing is, some people would say (as indeed someone does in this months DWM) that Hitler should be ridiculed at every opportunity precisely because of what he was. It's along the lines of never letting bullies know you're afraid of them.Lucy McGough wrote:I kind of agree about the whole Hitler thing. He shouldn't be made into a quasi-fictional figure of fun. Hitler's dead. If we ridicule him, he isn't going to know. So it's just getting cheap laughs out of genocide.

That was actually aimed at Al, I'm rather surprised (and impressed) that you've heard of that strip!Lucy McGough wrote:Hitler's dead. If we ridicule him, he isn't going to know. Re: We're Doooomed! Oh, wait: we're not...
Hitler was ridiculed during the war itself-and rightly si I believe. Sadly, the awful atrocities that were done on Hitlers orders do make it hard for me to see him less than an Abomination! Similary what Stalin did to his own people and the truly horrific bestiality the Japanese occupiers committed on the Chinese `before` the official start of WW2 are things I personally feel are just too serious to contemplate in Television `entertainment` Hence my avid following of things like "The World At War"
These are just my personal views and of course I understand others may take different viewpoints! See you after the holiday! cheers!

Regarding the Japanes during WWII, I've recently been watching 'Tenko' on the Yesterday channel, a superb series which highlights some of the more often overlooked horrors of the war (one of the stars, of course, being Doctor Who's own Louise Jameson).

Apparently the Hitler thing is a minor part of the ep anyway - its a proper sequel to AGMGTW, so I wouldn't miss it, personally...

Steven Moffat has now confirmed that there will be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012 and it will not be a split series but will run continously. It will, however, begin in the Autumn, meaning that this year's split series was probably intended to ease the transition and avoid an eighteen month gap between series'.
By what I'm sure is just a staggering coincidence, the return to Autumn scheduling means that who will almost certainly still be airing on Saturday 23rd November 2013...
