Sheldon Moldoff 1920-2012, RIP

Sheldon Moldoff, one of the unsung heroes of the Batman universe and arguably among the best artists ever to work on Hawkman, has died aged 91 according to his family. Moldoff broke into comics with a filler piece in Action Comics #1 back in 1938 and drew the covers for, among others, the first issues of Flash Comics and All-American Comics (which introduced the Flash and Green Lantern, respectively) before working on the Hawkman strip and creating Jon Valor, the Black Pirate. Later, as one of Bob Kane's ghost artists, he co-created Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bat-Mite, Ace the Bat Hound, the Silver Age Clayface and Bat-Girl (Betty Kane) though, under the terms of his deal with Kane, he received no credit for doing so. DC, apparently, weren't even aware he was working on Batman at the time...

91, eh? That's not a bad run at all.

i liked his work. in fact, i think i'll pull some trades that feature his art to read at work this week.

I've been reading through some GA Hawkman stuff of his over the weekend. There's a wonderful 'Flash Gordon' vibe to it...
