The Power of Three Empty The Power of Three

Post by tony ingram Sat Sep 22, 2012 8:21 pm

Whoah. The return of Brian, the rather more unexpected 'return' of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (first introduced in the video spin-off 'Downtime' back in 1995) and the weirdest invasion ever. I'm impressed. But isn't simultaneously defibrilating a third of the Earth's population just a bit of a stretch?

Average at best, though that's the equivalent of a big hit for Chibnall lol. I didn't hate it, which was surprising after the last 2 weeks. Kate was a nice touch (though how she ended up as head of UNIT given she was a gun-hating uber-pacifist in Downtime I'm not sure; perhaps that had changed by that second one she was in - Daemos Rising or something - which I've not seen) and there was a nice Doctor/Amy scene, but it was all a bit ordinary and very familiar. Not exactly bowled over by this season so far. Next week's should be a blinder though, touch wood.

Seriously? A series that gave us a bloke who travels through time and space in a police box and that's yer grouch? Shocked Though I take your point.

That was...interesting - the first character driven episode of the series. with the 'plot' just slipped into the background. This years thematic elements - eggs (re-birth or suprises? I haven't quite decided) and the concept or 'retribution' for past sins both present and correct.

A clever update/re-inforcement for UNIT as well - UN I.T. now - which seems much more in line with the Brig's vision than the trigger happy buffoons of RTD's era.

Plaudits to Matt Smith, who has the oldest eyes of any doctor yet. His scenes with Mark Williams (as good a 'companion parent' as Bernard Cribbins in the acting stakes) and Karen Gillan (which Moffat has apaprently said he wished he'd written) were brilliant.

I shall be sad to see the Ponds go but I can't wait for next week.

I shall miss them, too-definitely the best NuWho companions so far, and Brian has proved to be a wonderful addition to the recurring cast this year.

Having spoken to a couple of dealer mates this morning, it appears that there has been a sudden run on copies of Downtime and Daimos Rising, the two independent video spinoffs in which Kate Lethbridge-Stewart first appeared. Funny, that...

Though not as funny as the fact that Jemma Redgrave's hair was apparently dyed blonde specifically so that she would be convincing as an older version of the same character previously played by Beverley Cressman in the Reeltime/BBV productions, meaning that Kate is definitely the first character created for one of the spin-offs to be deliberately included in the parent series-and ironically, it happened in an episode broadcast in the same month in which Moffat stated in DWM that he "isn't making it for the fans"! I've noticed that this new season is leaning away from the horror side of things a bit and focusing more on the fantasy. To me, this is a good thing. My favorite episodes are the "everyone lives" ones, after all, and aside from that one guy in the hospital it would seem that "The Power of Three" was one of those. . .um. . .ones.

I also liked that quiet little moment The Doctor got with Amy and pretty much everything Arthur Weasley did. If Rory's dad became a new companion in the next half of this season I certainly wouldn't object.

I've really enjoyed the character of Brian-in just two appearances, he's really grown on me. It'd be a shame if we never saw him again.

This has been the only current Dr Who episode I have watched this season and I am afraid it just was not for me. I turned it off a couple of minutes before the end. Wether its good or bad is purely personal. In my case i I forced myself to watch from about 15 mins in I was so fed up with it.

I can't watch any more Matt Smith episodes under Stephen Moffatt as producer. What I'll do is what I did back in 1971 when I found season eight as awful is miss a couple of years then `dip` me toe back in (As I did in season 10) and hope for better!

Yes Cody! I watched 2 episodes and about 15min of 3rd of "Terror of the Autons" and I couldn't stand it! I only caught up with "The Deamons" when it was a revised Xmas repeat - did not care for it!

I only really caught up with half of Pertwee era (Seasons 8& 9 ) when I got video player in 1986. Along with season 22, season 8 is my most `disliked` I'm probably in a minoroity in that I feel Barry Letts (In particular) & Terrance Dicks got most of their mistakes out of their system in seasons 8 to 11. Paradoxically, I loved their work on the early 1980s "Classic Seriels")

I'm not a big fan of the post-season 7 Pertwee era either. There are a couple of really great serials like Day, Carnival and Time Warrior, but much of it is really weak IMHO.

As for season 8, Mind is pretty good and I think Colony is quite underrated but dragged down by the tedious Master stuff (ironically the opposite of what most of fandom thinks, it seems) but I agree, Autons and Daemons are pretty bad, both in writing and production (Holmes' heart doesn't seem to be in Autons at all; maybe he didn't really want to rehash Spearhead just one year on? And I could say the same for Hulke and Sea Devils/Silurians too). To be honest, I reckon season 9 is the classic series' worst, though. Can't stand anything besides Day.

Love season 22 though. Wink

Now for me, Day of the Daleks is one of the weaker stories, definitely my least favourite Dalek story from the first 26 years. I don't know why, but it just doesn't 'grab' me; I don't care about Anat's mob and their ****ed up future, the Daleks are barely a threat (it's obvious there are only three of them) and the story goes nowhere. On the other hand, I really like The Daemons, and don't mind Terror of the Autons (Delgado makes it worth watching, if nothing else does).

But I also love season 22.

Its good to have variety! Be a boring site if we all liked/disliked the same stuff!

I may not like seasons 8 & 22, but they have their fans and that's great!

When I did eventually watch all the season 8 stories I could only warm to "Claws of Axos" I thought putting the Master in all stories was a bit "Batman & Robin" "Terror of the Autons" gave all the `Mary Whitehouse` brigade the excuse to start a long running campaign against the show. I actually agree that the Auton/Policemen and Killer `Troll/Doll were too far for the timeslot of the show then.

To me, "Terror of the Autons" is far more voilent than, say "Seeds of Doom"

There (in my view) seemed to be a sort of casual voilence in season 8 I recall that scene where the Master runs over Neil McArthurs character in "The Mind of Evil" was that really necessary?

I do have my like from seasons 9 to 11. "Curse of Peladon" "Three Doctors" "Carnival of Monsters" "Planet of Daleks" "Green Death" and "Invasion of Dinosaurs"

Planet of the Daleks a 150 minute rollercoaster of thrills! Invisible Daleks, floating Daleks, invisible aliens and killer plants spewing venom-it could have been eight episodes and I wouldn't have minded!

Certainly divides opinion! It was the previous "Frontier in Space" I found boring when I caught up with it; but "Planet of Daleks" was fine with me. Having now seen all the Jon Pertwee seasons, the stories where my mind wanders are "Colony in Space" "Mind of Evil" "The Mutants" "Time Monster" "Sea Devils" "Frontier in Space" "Monster of Peladon" was 2 eps too long and those Jonathan King wigs!! But it had its moments!

I'm totally against whatever Terrance Dicks keeps going on about the 7th season. He had to work on it- but he wasn't in the audience shoes!

Actually, the only one of those I find almost unwatchable is The Monster of Peladon, which seems to drag on interminably. I quite like The Mind of Evil (it has something of an Avengers vibe, I think), and neither The Mutants nor The Time Monster have ever struck me as being worthy of the poor reputations they seem to have in fandom. Frontier in Space, I think, is a good story let down by a messy ending.

I think the mutants works a bit better if I watch it two eps an evening over three nights. Some nice CSO for a change in there and the `Mutts` look good to me.

Its one of Katy Mannings better performances but I just can't warm to her character, even by her final showing in the Green Death.

If anyone can bear to watch any of the "Last of Summer Wine" repeats on Channel 19 now (Used to be 12) Cotton & Stubbs ancestors must have originated there!

I think Cotton and Stubbs were one of my favourite Who double acts. Though Cotton's name was a bit unfortunate given his ethnicity and the BBC's attitude to race at the time...

Oh! I hadn't `cottoned` on to that Tony! I just watched "Image of the Fendahl" Havn't seen that in years, but it's entertained me very well indeed! I am certainly enjoying many Tom Baker shows these days!

Even though season 15 had an increase in humour, both "Horror of Fang Rock" and "Fendahl" seem more in the style of seasons 12 & 13.

My mind really wandered off in ep five of "The Mutants" i'm afraid, just can't concentrate on it.

Very claustrophobic feel to it; a sort of throwback to the Troughton era with a small group of persons under seige, but with added `chill` factor!

In "Image of the Fendahl" did Thea Ransome turn into Wanda Woman? Wink

Fendahl is okay, but it's got some truly diabolical dialogue in it (very unusually for Boucher).

Fang Rock and Sun Makers are the real standouts of season 15 IMHO.

I must get "Sun Makers" soon as I can afford it. "Invasion of Time" is one I must have missed as I can't recall it- but if its ok by Tony must have some merit.

I forced myself to finish the `Mutants` can't say i'll be watching it again soon, but as I got it on E.Bay for under £6.00 wasn't a waste!

Part of what I like about The Invasion of Time is what everyone else seems to hate-the scenes inside the TARDIS, filmed in an old hospital. For some reason, those two episodes really work, for me, despite the incongruity of the TARDIS lower levels apparently having brick walls...

It does have one of the most unlikely coincidences in Doctor Who in it, though: Hugo Land just happening to put on the one garment in the entire wardrobe room which happens to have the power pack to his gun hidden in it.

I'm afraid I only watched part of the first episode of `Twin Dilemma` when the Doctor was strangling Peri I decided I didn't want to `go there` and only came back to the series for the `Two Doctors` (Then wished I hadn't!!)

Going back to the `strangulation` Where the Doctor caught sight of his reflection whilst `in the act` was cribbed from the 1968 feature film "The Boston Strangler" where the same happens to Tony Curtis` character.
