Joe Kubert (September 18th 1926-August 12th 2012) RIP
Legendary artist Joe Kubert passed away yesterday aged 85. He had been working in comics since 1942, though he was arguably best known for his Silver Age work on series' such as Hawkman, Sgt. Rock and The Haunted Tank, all for DC Comics (he was also DC's Director of Publications from 1967-1976).

I saw that this morning. What a rough year for comics creators.
I really liked Kubert's work, especially on Hawkman. I used to have a trade of the first few issues, and his work was just gorgeous.

Kubert had a style very unlike most of his fellow American comic artists-ihis Hawkman and Viking Prince reminded me of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, or of some British artists of the time. And he was without equal when it came to period detail on war stories. Even if Sgt. Rock did always wear ammunition belts totally incompatible with his guns...

I learned to draw from a book he did. What a shame.

The Daily Telegraph has published a rather good obituary:

A nice tribute, though they got there rather late...

I reckon when he died they had no idea who he was, so they had to spend a couple of months researching him.
On the other hand, when Amy Winehouse died they had the obituary all ready to go, although she was only 27. The obituaries editor says that it was obvious to everybody that she was very unwell.

Yes. Particularly after she stopped breathing and turned blue.Lucy McGough wrote:The obituaries editor says that it was obvious to everybody that she was very unwell.
