11 Doctors for the 50th Anniversary?

Post by tony ingram on Tue Jan 22, 2013 9:16 am

The Birmingham Mail, of all things, has reported that there is to be a 90 minute 50th Anniversary TV Special featuring all eleven Doctors (the first three resurrected by "studio trickery") and appears to have a comment from Matt Smith to back it up. Only a rumour at present, but the sheer amount of detail in the piece gives pause for thought, I think. See here: http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/tv/eleven-time-lords-to-feature-in-50th-1228442

Everyone just needs to put their personal nonsense aside and do this for the fans, I say. For instance, William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee need to quit being dead. Very selfish.

I couldn't agree more. It's just laziness.

Oh lord I so hope this isn't going to happen. Unless it's fleeting flashbacks only. I have no interest in this as an idea.

Besides, they'll need studio trickery for everybody except McCoy, McGann, Ecclestone (assuming he'd do it which I doubt), Tennant and Smith. Baker (T), Davison and Baker (C) are all doing pretty good impersonations of fully furnished houses these days.

That's a little unnecessary, I think. These are real people, presumably with internet access, we're discussing. And I doubt any of us will look as good at seventy as we did at forty. Not that I looked that great at forty...

Nonetheless, a usually reliable source is reporting that none of the classic series actors have been approached, but that Tennant and Eccleston (and possibly McGann) have. That doesn't please me, but if true, it doesn't surprise me. I can't help feeling that the BBC is somewhat embarrassed by the old series and doesn't see the 50th as anything more than a marketing opportunity.

Didn't they already explain away Davison's age when he met Tennant as some sort of temporary timey-wimey thing? They could just do that again.

They did, and it was a very clever explanation which would work perfectly well again: being in the same time and place as his older self "shorted out the timee differential", making the fifth Doctor appear as he would have if he'd never regenerated.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I'll admit I'm also somewhat puzzled by the criticism of the BBC attempting to whitewash Dr Who history. The re-releases, both in scheduling and quality (far in advance of virtually everything else the BBC put out on dvd) rather suggests otherwise.

It would appear to be bs. Colin has flat out declared that he hasn't been asked or contacted in any way, and according to an industry flyer from some toy fair or something, the special is only 60 minutes long anyway.

Oh, everyone's in a great spitting the dummy hissy fit over on GB. Doesn't appear there'll be anything from a series 8 either. So it's just the other half of season 7 and one 60 minute special for the anniversary.

It's getting scary over there. They Are NOT Happy. Wink

Same on several other forums. It's been all doom and gloom at Ian Levine's place for months...

Actually, scratch that comment: it's been all doom and gloom at Ian Levine's place for years, so it's hardly relevant.
If the BBC announced tomorrow we'd be getting a run of 52 weeks starting next week, they'd still assume it was part of a plot to cancel the show next January.

Self-entitled fanboys who all think they could make a TV series from their mum's bedroom.

The BBC is right to disregard the lot of them, particularly Levine.

Let's just say that I find the announcement that Tenth Planet is the first serial to get a new style animated episode both interesting and fitting.

Unfortunately true. Then again, there's very little still to release:The Mind of Evil, Terror of the Zygons, The Ice Warriors, The Tenth Planet and the two recently recovered episodes is about it now, isn't it?

There's always animations. Given that Dan Hall has stated that - so far - they can afford 2 animated eps per release, the likes of The Moonbase, The Crusade and Underwater Menace with its newly recovered ep too all have to be up for consideration for completion. Apparently there's going to be some revelations about future animations at a convention next month.

The G4 ep is of course, in a totally nonexploitative manner, will be included with The Aztecs re-release. Mad

I was extremely annoyed about that myself-having bought the story once on VHS and again on DVD, I have no wish to buy it a third time. But apparently there is at least a short recon of the rest of Galaxy 4 with the missing episode.

I'm not sure they'd animate The Crusade and The Moonbase given that the Lost in Time set includes both the surviving episodes and the soundtracksof the missing ones, but I'd say The Underwater Menace is a definite possibility.

Given the amount of complete stories they re-release, I fail to see any good reason why they wouldn't release a complete Moonbase and Crusade if they could!

A little more news emerging, this time about the 'docudrama' the BBC have planned about the programme's beginnings: Brian Cox and Call The Midwife's Jessica Raine are to play Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert, while David Bradley is playing William Hartnell.

Some more news emerging about the Anniversary Special. It's apparently to be directed by Nick Hurran, who previously directed The Girl Who Waited, The God Complex, Asylum of the Daleks and The Angels Take Manhattan. Not a bad choice, but I was rather hoping for Graeme Harper...

I would have preferred Toby Haynes or Adam Smith, to be honest. What's happened to them?

Harper wasn't really all that great in New Who, though he probably deserves some kind of award for making an episode with a Chibnall script exciting.

David Tennant has told the Radio Times that he's "beginning to give up hope" of being contacted about being involved in the 50th Anniversary. Which is admittedly not looking good for any proposed 11 Doctors story, but looking on the bright side, does mean I won't have to put up with David Tennant again...

I really hope the 11 Doctors happens and that DWM confirmation of David Tennant being the only past Doctor is wrong.

Curious how there's been no sign of any location filming at the moment.

It's not looking good, is it? I was really hoping we were being kept in the dark and would get a real surprise in November, but I think Moffat and the BBC may have let us down. I can't understand how anyone could so totally fail to see the point of an anniversary. Very worrying.

There's hope yet. You never know. The classic series Doctors may have been involved in some secret studio filming and DWM could be having us on. They lied about Jenna Louise Coleman's debut episode being 'The Snowmen' and not 'Asylum of the Daleks',so anything is possible. I'll continue to keep a open mind.
