Explanation to come. Empty Explanation to come.

Hello,
I had something happen the other day, and I want to ask you all a question before I explain. Do you think Watchmen requires prior reading, or at least would have in 1986, or not? I don't want to bias what happened, so I'll explain after.

I don't think so.

I imagine it would be less interesting if you weren't already familiar with comics and their conventions in SOME way, but you could probably get the same effect from seeing the Batman and Superman TV shows a couple of times. STARTING with a deconstruction of somethng just doesn't make much sense to me.

This was my point. It was written FOR a superhero audience (it was sold in the direct market, with no one knowing how it would explode out of that market until it had been out for a while), and it was a deconstruction of/commentary on superheroes. I don't see how you'd get that if you hadn't read superheroes before. Fairly deeply, too.

I didn't mean this to be a secretive thing, or to take so long. I just didn't want to bias people's answers. I was "discussing" comics with Ron Marz and Kurt Busiek on Twitter (replied to a comment, offhandedly, and it went on from there) and this was one point where both of them got pretty nasty. I am usually VERY pro-writer/creator, but Marz especially came off as a jackass. He tried to close the discussion by saying his "2+ decades of writing this" trumped my point, and when I tried (as politely as I could) to walk away by letting him know I'd just unfollow so he didn't have to block me, he went off about how I didn't want to hear other opinions, ignoring the fact that we'd been having a discussion for 30 minutes and I only walked away when he was being a jerk, and then pulled a "when creators take the time to have a discussion with you" bit of prissiness.
Yeesh. I didn't respond (although I kept a screenshot of that one), but I was pissed. If a fan had said anything that nasty to him, it would be all over the boards.

So, I waited to respond here, so as not to be unnecessarily angry (I really wasn't, some people just are jerks, that's life) and to see what others thought.
Thanks!

Huh. I wonder if Kurt Busiek thinks that Astro City would read as well without prior knowledge, too. If he does, he's wrong about TWO things.

Seriously, though, what a couple of tools. I'm sorry you had to get into a fight with them like that, as I know from experience that it colors your perception of their work. To this day I still roll my eyes at a certain writer's little tics that I used to find endearing, all because they got into an internet fight with me. If Marz and Busiek had been aware of this effect, they might've been a little more respectful. It doesn't take much to become the next John Byrne.

Marz said that there was no prior reading, because the characters didn't exist before issue 1. Missed the point, I think.

Oh, it wasn't a fight, I won't do that any more and that's why I tried to just walk away. And that's when Marz made his ridiculous remarks...

I'd bet money they think I was being disrespectful. Marz clearly did, in that I didn't think him being a writer meant he was correct. It's a perception issue, so no big deal.

Oh, you're so nice, Mike. If it were me this would be a grudge that would never die.
