Just an hour and a half until this episode airs, so I thought I'd set this thread up early. I'm looking forward to this one...

A nice, uncomplicated 'siege' storyline which made good use of the Ice Warriors (and I liked the unmasked Warrior, very effective). Clara is growing on me, too. And David Warner was great as the Ultravox loving Professor. A definite improvement on last week!

Fantastic stuff and did away with RTD's ridiculous continuity wrecking howler from Waters of Mars.
Slowly but surely every piece of his continuity altering bobbins is being done away with. Roll on Nightmare in Silver which hopefully puts the Cybusmen to bed for good and all.

Actually, I'm not sure there was any continuity conflict with Waters of Mars: didn't the Doctor mention the Ice Warriors in that episode? I think the idea is that by that time, the Warriors had relocated to other worlds.BluesShark wrote:Fantastic stuff and did away with RTD's ridiculous continuity wrecking howler from Waters of Mars.

WOM was a deathly dull episode, though...

I actually like Waters of Mars (it's easily the best of the stand alone specials imo) but it definitely implies the Ice Warriors were extinct, not just scattered.

Ah, right. I'd say "I'll have to watch it again" but, y'know, it's by RTD and has Tennant in it, so...BluesShark wrote:I actually like Waters of Mars (it's easily the best of the stand alone specials imo) but it definitely infers the Ice Warriors were extinct, not just scattered.

'Waters of Mars' was not dull! There were scary water monsters running around trying to kill people! Another good 'base under siege' story, in fact.

Waters of Mars was considerably superior to THIS dullathon.

I wouldn't go so far as to describe 'Cold War' as "dull," although the ending was a bit weedy.

I thought it was anything but dull! Very tense ad exciting throughout, as far as I was concerned. And unlike WOM, it did have Ice Warriors and didn't have David Tennant, which are both definite pluses.

Re: Rate 'Cold War'
I'm always interested when a monster, race, or individual from the original program returns.
I love seeing the modern interpretation and Skaldak didn't disappoint. No more clumsy shuffling about, no more soft, whispery voice you can barely understand (this seemed to be a common occurrence during the show's original run).
I thought having Skaldak out of his armor was brilliant. It was a first, even the Doctor said so!
A full, animatronic body had been built, but it was only seen sparingly, which I think heightened the suspense and menace.
One shortcoming that is often seen on Doctor Who, although other programs have done it as well, is that with most alien races only one gender is usually seen. This can be justified with the Sontarans, which are a sexless clone race and the Cybermen, where gender indentity and anatomical traits are removed (are the Daleks a genderless race?).
In Cold War Skaldak refers to his daughter several times. The next time the Ice Warriors show up I hope we finally see what the women look like.
An excellent episode.

I agree with most of that, but I actually liked the original "oh dear, I have space laryngitis" voices. Then again, I also liked the original Tenth Planet Cyberman voices...
Do you know, I think you may be the first person in fifty years to ask if the Daleks have gender?

I've always liked those voices too. I'd like hear a modern version of them in the current series.

I reckon the Daleks are all male, or else they'd have conquered the universe by now.
