Just thought it would be fun to stir up a few memories of classic toys from times past. To start with: anyone else remember the Mego action figures from the 70s?

You've got the Dapol console! Oh, I've never even seen one of those! Very, very nice set, HG! The console was incredibly rare, as I recall; it was recalled early on because they screwed up and gave it five sides instead of six...

It is a nice peace but the centre always comes off the rudder if you use it and it's so damn noisy. It's part of the box set I got as a child, god how I wish I never opened it now Sad

I've a few more peaces but not sure if you'd call them toys

A great collection-the chess set was another one of those items I coveted from afar! I do have most of the original Doctor Who toy line, though...

I also have the Doctor and the TARDIS (but not Leela. She was a girl! Yuck!).

No, the Palitoy talking Dalek. It still works too, though it sounds a little drunk these days.

I had a period of coveting Star Wars toys in the late 90's when those Special Edition things were coming out (they didn't make the Ion Cannon shots blue, though). I also dreamed of creating a huge Hornby train set... but we were poor so they never really came off.

I just made up my own stuff with Lego instead... i had heaps of that! There's still a "pirate chest" full of it in the garage somewhere.

That would be when Lego was still proper Lego of course, rather than the pre-made kits you get now.

In his Toy Stories book he interviews the new director of Lego, who admitted it had "lost it's way" and is going back to simpler components again!

Now if only Meccano would do the same...

I heartily agree! I must get that book-I've loved his Toy Stories series! The Lego house was admittedly less than successful, but his Meccano bridge was fantastic...

I got the Toy Stories book for Christmas, thought it's on a huge reading pile so who knows when I'll get to it.

Anyone remember those ??

Great titles included
Explorers
Invasion
The Lost City
Fire Fighters
and lots, lots more

Wish they still produced these....

I not only remember them, I still have some! Not sure where they are, mind. But yes, Letraset, Kalkitos...transfers were very much a part of my childhood. I shall have to try to find them and post them here...

I also remember some Letraset-like small adventure sets, and of course the larger Star Wars ones.

Guys

Look what I've come across

This is excellent
Brought back so many memories

I remember having almost all of these

I've even sent an email to Letraset Uk to ask if they still produced these or if not whether they would consider bringing them back !!!

The ones I remember must've been later -- deffo had a space themed one, with glow-in-the-dark silhouettes for some of the transfers. There were some glow-in-the-dark silhouette ones as cereal packet freebies at some point too -- especially in Ready Brek! Wink

If only i'd kept me Sparky free gifts from 1965 to 71 (The period I read Sparky) the "Flicker Pics" was the best (from 1970) My mate, Neil Maybury went and inflated and let off his `Flying Snorter` in class (1967) he got the Pump! for that and old Cadman (Maths Teacher) confisticated it! Aaah! memories! I'm currently getting a short `Sparky Free Gifts` piece together (on `Word`) for consideration for Crikey!

Another comic gave away a Flying Snorter a few years later, I'm sure! Can't remember which one, though. But I definitely had one!

Tony! I think it was Dandy! The `Snorters` were given away by most Thomson comics! Sometimes the design and name was changed a little-but they were basically the same thing!

Sparky gave two near identical Snorters free in the 1st issue (23 Jan 65)and issue 140 (23 Sept 67)

I just got hold of the "Zoomer Boomerang" which was free in Sparky 212 (8 Feb 69) Its not `mint` but pretty good condition! I won't try forcing it together to see if it flies as it would strain the cardboard a bit too much now! Hope my Sparky Free gift article is OK for Crikey!

At the charity shop where I now work, we got a complete set of original ghost busters figures in mint condition. These are the ones from the original animated series which came after the movie and are quite collectable. They also gave us a ton of annuals but I havent had time to look at them yet. I do worry some poor sod has had his mother clean out his closet and given us his collection. It's not unheard of, a friend of mine blew his top when his mother binned his complete DAPOL Dr who figure set.
