Chris Barry, the longest serving Director of classic Doctor Who (43 episodes between 1963 and 1979, including the first Dalek story and the introductory stories of both Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker) died last Friday at the age of 88 after a fall at his home in Oxfordshire. Aside from Doctor Who, his 51 year career also included episodes of All Creatures Great & Small, Compact, Z-Cars, Poldark, Paul Temple, Juliet Bravo, The Onedin Line, The Tripods, Dramarama, Moonbase 3 and Out of the Unknown, as well as the 1995 straight to video Doctor Who spin-off Downtime (which starred Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen, and introduced the character of Kate Lethbridge Stewart).
