Rik Mayall RIP
The BBC have just announced that actor and comedian Rik Mayall has died, aged just 56. No age at all. Very, very sad news.

God rest his soul. You're right; that's far too young.

"And all the grown-ups will say 'but why are the kids crying?' And the kids will say 'haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The people's poet is dead!' And then one particularly sensitive and articulate teenager will say 'other kids, do you understand nothing? How can Rick be dead when we still have his poems?"

I saw him in both Black Adder and The Young Ones, and he was great. Sucks, and so young.

Did you ever see The New Statesman? I think scheming M.P Alan B'Stard was Mayall's greatest comedy creation.

Loved him in Drop Dead Fred. Oh, and as Flash of course; I always thought it was funny how much Blackadder despised him, and how WE were clearly MEANT to despise him, but the audience always cheered at everything he said or did. Talk about charisma!
RIP, Rik.
RIP, Rik.

No, I haven't, but not I'll have to. Not like I'm not finding a ton of British stuff lately I don't have time to watch. (Mock the Week, Charlie Brooker, QI, and on and on...)
Thanks!

Agreed. He was amazing in that role (well, roles, technically). I think Black Adder might be my favorite comedy ever, and considering how much I love MASH, that's something.

Sorry to derail this topic somewhat, but if you don't have time to watch QI, you need to make time! Where else can you find not only comedy, but also the largest supply of useless but interesting facts on the planet?Mbast1 wrote:tony ingram wrote:Did you ever see The New Statesman? As Ford Prefect wisely said, "time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so".

I love Douglas Adams's work, the man was so much fun to read. Really miss him.

He was a genius. I wish we'd had more Dirk Gently! And I wish he'd had the chance to finish his final Hitch Hiker's novel and undo the downbeat ending of Mostly Harmless, as he wanted to.

I just picked up the first novel yesterday. Starting it soon. I don't remember why I never read it. I also need to hunt down a copy of Salmon of Doubt.

Did you see that there's a sequel, written by Eoin (sp?) Colfer? I liked his Artemis Fowl work, but no thanks.

I just avoided it, because I thought it might be.

Even his Artemis Fowl stuff got a lot less good as the series went on, and ended up kinda... preachy.
