Is it just me, or is it a bit on the decrepit and moldy side around here today?

Post by MajorHoy on Thu Jul 03, 2014 2:41 pm

It's Thursday morning where I am, and it doesn't seem like many of you folks were very active while I was sleeping.  Sleep

Is it a holiday over there somewhere in the U.K., or is the nation in mourning since Andy Murray got knocked out so early at Wimbledon, or is there really that big a deal over Mick Jagger's soiled underwear?

(I know we have a national holiday coming up here in the states, but for some reason I don't think it would really be a big hoopla across the pond.)

I am NOT clicking that link! *shudders*

I've been reading The Silkworm by JK Rowling all day.

Actually, it's a link to an article from http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ about a historic country house called Knebworth.

(Honest! I don't know enough about Hertfordshire to make that up!)

In answer to the original question, I'm rarely around that much Thursday through Saturday. Those are my busiest days.

Today I'll do some shopping (med-related and food stuff) and then hang around at home waiting for Arthur to finish passing by.

Then tomorrow (Saturday), I'll FINALLY have a chance to go get comic books for this week. (I'd try today, but the weather is questionable and I don't know if the store will be open today.)

'Arthur' is far too polite a name to belong to something that will inflict any major damage.

Are we done with that "Middle of Summer" thing yet?

And I thought I saw that today (Monday the 25th where I am, though it's already Tuesday in the UK) was a "Bank Holiday" except for Scotland. Does that mean bankers got a chance to go on fabulous vacations with the money people deposit in banks except in Scotland because people there are . . . frugal?

No, it just means that nobody could get anything done because the banks were shut so the country ground to a halt for a day. Last bank holiday until Christmas, though.

Then what is the point of a "bank holiday"? Does it give them a day to focus on cooking the books or something?

It's an old tradition. Usually, they were dedicated to saints.

There isn't one. They are simply public holidays, but they are called bank holidays because the banks are closed on them. The banks used to close on the official holidays of (according to Wikipedia) "about 33 saints or religious festivals", but the government considered this slightly riduculous and ordered the number reduced. Initially, it was dropped to four: Christmas Day, Good Friday, May Day and All Saints Day. Then they passed the Bank Holidays Act of 1871 which added in a few more-Easter Monday, Boxing Dy, Whit Monday and, for some reason, the first Monday in August (which has since been moved to the last Monday in Agust). All Saints Day was dropped, and since then New Year's Day has been added.

So, after the 26th of October, things should start perking up a wee bit more around here?

(And how many people commonly say "estuary"? I know what one is . . . I use to work in one . . . but still, . . . )

It's a word in common usage around here, at least. And have you never heard of Estuary English?

Uh, dude, why would we have heard of that here across the pond? I doubt people would have that accent in da Bronx or Jersey. (Translation: The Bronx, a borough of New York City; the State of New Jersey.)

And many people don't realize the state where I live (Connecticut) may have a coast line, but it doesn't lie on the Atlantic Ocean. (It's an estuary named The Long Island Sound.)

My village is right on the end of the Shotley peninsula, a spit of land bordered by the rivers Stour and Orwell, which both open out into the North Sea between the ports of Felixstowe (in Suffolk) and Harwich (in Essex). So, we have estuaries on both sides of Shotley Gate.
