Bored with comics right now

Post by Mbast1 on Tue Sep 29, 2015 3:12 pm

I'm going through one of those periods where I'm bored with comics. There are things which could be interesting, and there are tons of reprints of things I think I'd enjoy, but I just can't really get into anything.
Anyone else go through these periods?

I have done, in the past. I almost gave up on comics at one point in the late 90s. But I always seem to get drawn back in. My main problem right now is not interest, but time. I seem to have too many things constantly competing for my attention to have time to just sit down and read.

I think that's partly what I'm dealing with, too. SO much going on right now, and it's making it hard to find the time to get into too much.
It always passes, though, and I find something I want.

I had such a busy day on Friday, which ended so late, that I basically could not switch off-just couldn't sleep. So for want of anything else to do, I got up and pulled out some old issues of Marvel's New Mutants from the eighties and just read about half a dozen before going back to bed. It was incredibly relaxing, and I'd forgotten how much I once liked that book!

I just haven't had the time to really do much reading. With TV I can leave it on as I do other things, but with reading attention is required.
But I agree about the relaxing and finding old things to find interesting again.

I actually find TV very distracting if it's on in the background. Radio, I can ignore. TV tends to draw me in.

I would agree to some extent. That's why when I just want background noise (as when I'm getting ready for work in the morning) I keep on sitcoms, usually one I've seen before. That way I can miss things and not worry.

Our TV is usually permanently tuned to BBC News during the day.

That would never work for me. I'm a news junkie, and I'd have my attention pulled to the TV all day. Especially BBC news, which I consider to be top tier.

A fair point. I rarely feel the need to get my news from anywhere else (I stopped buying a paper years ago).

DC, I'm guessing?

Actually, I seem to know a lot of older people these days who don't buy 'current' comics. I guess there's a real schism between them and the readers the companies are currently targeting.

I remember that! I actually liked a lot of the Atlas books, and some of them had great covers. Remember Planet of Vampires?

Yuppers, though in my case it's dissatisfaction with many of the "name" writers and not as many characters/titles being offered at present that deal with what I'd really like to read right now.

Out of curiosity: aside from the JSA, who is absent right now that you'd really like back? I'm always quietly hoping for a new Captain Britain book, obviously, and for a new Defenders series with the classic mid 70s line-up (Nighthawk, Val, Doc Strange, Hulk and Hellcat, primarily).

Off-hand,
* Lobster Johnson (Dark Horse)
* Black Beetle (Dark Horse)
* The Shadow (but set in the 1930s/1940s)
* Miss Fury
* Gotham Central
* Sgt. Rock (in WWII)
* Unknown Soldier (in WWII)
* Codename: Gravedigger (in WWII)
* Blackhawk (during WWII or maybe in the 1950s)
* The Invaders (during WWII)
* The Liberty Legion (during WWII)
I'd list All-Star Squadron and the original Freedom Fighters as well, but those may be tied in to whatever happened with the JSA.

And I'd like Marvel to finish publishing All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes, but I'm assuming the chances for that are probably lower than Donald Trump having gender reassignment surgery.

I think whatever happened to the JSA affected only them. Jesse Quick and Max Mercury seem to be among the speedsters who Hunter Zolomon has hinted are trapped in the Speed Force, so maybe Johnny Quick is too. And Ray Terrill turning up in JLA seems to make it unikely that his dad was one of the heroes who Johnny Thunder caused to disappear (if, indeed, that's what he did) in 1950.

Well, since there weren't (supposedly) any known superheroes/mystery men publicly operating during WWII/the 1940s, I'm not sure how much whatever affected the JSA may have also had an effect on the Golden Age heroes in general. There are strange things like Kent Nelson as Doctor Fate and the Carter Hall version of Hawkman, but who knows what's going on there.
(And that's another reason I'm mondo-p!$$@d-off with DC for dragging things out without at least answering some questions before dropping more confusing things into the mix!)

Also, aside from the Golden Age Sandman and Sandy turning up in Bug, the Bob Crane Robotman got namechecked in Doom Patrol and, while I never read the series, I did see a three or four page preview of that unrelated Ray limited series a few years back in which the new Ray character seemed to be implying that he had stolen the name of an established hero, presumably Happy Terrill. Plus, Madame Fatal apparently operated in the forties on the New 52 Earth.

Sounds like the sort of thing that could be easily retconned, should the need arise.

I think it already has been, by several writers just quietly ignoring the restriction.

Well, saying "it already has been" may be a slight overstatement since I still don't know if any of those characters have been shown to be "publicly operating during WWII/the 1940s" yet in the general DC storylines.
Any references to past-era heroes I'm aware of seem to be either isolated incidents or just not mentioned anywhere else yet except by the one writer.
It's like when Grant Morrison seemed to somehow reference EVERY weird Batman story from the 1950s during his run, but then (as far as I'm aware) they seemed to be forgotten again (though since I haven't read most of Tom King's Batman, who knows what he's done there).

Comics can't spend all their time referencing old storylines to reassure readers that said storylines are still in continuity. They need to spend some time actually telling new stories.

I once had a "conversation" with Kurt Busiek and Ron Marz about this. They talked about Doctor Who, and how it kept it's continuity for decades. They both insisted that you NEEDED to tell all that stuff in a story, and it was lazy to do otherwise. I finally agreed that Doctor Who WAS a good example of doing it right (in my opinion) because you gave just enough of the past to tell the story you want to tell because you know NOW that the internet connects fans, has encyclopedia and forums, etc. and if someone wants to know more they can find that you. Both of them insisted you had to pack it all in, and I said as a reader I hated that. Terrible expository dialogue, stopping what's going on. If I want to know, I'll do the work to find out the unnecessary background. And what makes me want to know? A GOOD STORY.
That said, they were both assholes. I went out of my way to be polite, because I grew to hate internet arguments, and they were people working in the industry. But, Busiek simply asserted I was wrong, and Marz pulled the lamest "argument from authority" I've ever seen.

That said, I agree with you, stop telling us what we can find out in 5 minutes, and tell us what you want to tell us now.

There's a difference between "telling us" what's already happened and not even knowing if the company/writers still consider it as having happened any more.

I know he has that reputation, but I've interacted with him twice, and both times he was really snotty. Could be he normally is a nice guy, and I just caught him on bad days, but that's my experience.

Did you interact with him just at comic book conventions or such, or at other times?
I had only met up with at places like a comic book shop or at parties.
