Yeah. Poor old Mel was one of only two companions from modern day Earth (aside from the deliberately anonymous Ace) who never even got a last name on screen, although she was supposed to have been called 'Melanie Bush'.

Yes! Mel was `Melanie Jane Bush` and Ace was `Dorothy McShane` the full names revealed in the Virgin books series! (I think Ace's also quoted on one of the `Big Finish` Audios)

Re: Last Who You Watched
Actually, Dorothy was originally named (somewhat speculatively) 'Dorothy Gale' after the character from The Wizard of Oz. After she was given the McShane name (in several Big Finish audios she actually just goes by 'McShane' rather than 'Ace') t was eventually decided that Gale was her middle name.alanultron5 wrote:Yes! If there had been a season 27 Ace would have left after the second story as Sophie was only contracted for eight more eps past season 28. She was to be replaced by the daughter of a 1960s American gangster according to the `legend` Mind Boggles! Got to get Charlotte's dinner now! Cheers!

Re: Last Who You Watched
Just watched "Ghost Light" and "Survival" `Ghost Light` really needed a fourth ep -as was pointed out on the extra's. Still very good though- reminded me a bit of "The Beckoning Shadow" episode from "Mystery and Imagination" I think the `Husks` should have got their own series!
"Survival" Hmm! Must admit-didn't stand up so well for me this time around! That Planet `Jaunting` -bit too much like the Tomorrow People! Can't say I found the Cheetah people very convincing! As for the Kitling!! I'm sure that was previously in the very final Monty Python Episode ("Party Political Broadcast") back in 1974 in the "Worst Family in the UK" Sketch - halfway embedded through a living room wall!

Aww, I thought the Kitling was cute...
Which admittedly probably wasn't the effect intended, but never mind.

Technology of the day-scuppered the Kitlings chances of a showbiz career I reckon! Maybe a job on the Roland Rat show?

I'm still not entirely clear on what the Husks were or why they were there. I mean, I get that they were earlier, less evolved versions of Josiah, but why were they wearing dinner suits?

Re: Last Who You Watched
I can only guess that the show didn't want to show viewers the sight of the Husks going around in the `nip` and that Josiah for his own amusement dressed them up like that!
So much in that story was rather confusing (Stephen Moffat must surely love it!) One thing that should have been clearer is - what was the hold that Josiah had over Mrs Pritchard, Gwendolyne and those night maids? I really think just a line or two of clarification would help viewers!
A smaller point is just why was light so against Evolution - what was his motivation? Surely any advanced life form realises why Evolution occurs and the need for it?
I must try and seek out the novelisation to see if any more is said on it!
I did read in a Dr Who Magazine that something happened to the master print of the story. This would explain why the copy on DVD looks rather `washed out`.

I just assumed it was good, old fashioned brainwashing he used on the ladies, to be honest! Though in Gwendolyn's case I doubt it took much effort; I think the implication was that she was psychotic anyway...

Andrew Cartmel does disclose some background to `Light, Josiah & Control` on the `extra's` section which helps a bit! I do feel it should have been a four-parter though!

It would certainly have stretched to four. I actually think that entire season is one of Doctor Who's best-I even liked Battlefield!

Re: Last Who You Watched
Battlefield is the one story that season that I have still to get from Season 26. I think it broke the `War Games` twenty year held record for lowest ever watched episode with barely more than 3m for its first episode. Sadly, a record never likely to be broken now!
I still puzzle as to why season 26 had such low viewing figures -even in comparison to seasons 23 - 25.
Interesting documentary on the `Survival` DVD with Peter Cregeen at least bieng brave enough to give his reasons as to why he put Dr Who into `abeyance` so to speak! Afraid old JNT did himself no favours at the BBC when offered the Producers job on `Bergerac` according to Andrew Cartmel. Seemingly JNT offered the post during season 26, but he stated he wanted John Nettles replaced and the series moved fro Guernsey/Jersey. Cartmel stated how a couple of years later JNT related toi him he had made a big mistake in this! Hmm!
Got to pop off now! Back Monday!

The fact that S26 was placed opposite Cornoation Street and received almost no promotion probably had a lot to do with the viewing figures. Even some committed fans didn't know the series had started!

Re: Last Who You Watched
Just got the `Ultimate Foe` DVD! One of the extra's, The `Trials & Tribulations` documentary is quite fascinating. (It concerns Colin Bakers tenure and controversial departure) Except for Colin, All Major principals involved, come out of it - in my view - extremely badly; especially Jonathan Powell. To say he is mendacious is no exaggeration! That man was a disgrace to the BBC if the way he conducted himself re Colin Baker is anywhere a typical example of Powell's behaviour!
John Nathan Turner, Eric Saward and Ian Levine all seem like folks in a pretty unbelievable `Soap Opera` and that appearance by Michael Grade on a 2002 edition of "Room 101" does him no favours either I feel!

I saw that Room 101 when it was first broadcast. Grade came across as a smirking, smug killjoy who delighted in mocking the people he'd upset.

Yes! I felt the same when I watched it then. Grade didn't exactly do wonders when he left the BBC for Channel 4 as far as I can tell.
As for Jonathan Powell! His predecessor, David Reid could not belive Powell ran his department based on what programmes he did or did not like!
Both Grade and Powell decided that viwers opinions (Not just appreciation societies etc) would not count for anthing while they were at the BBC! What with JNT and Saward `helming` `Dr Who` in that era- no wonder poor Colin B got caught in the `Flak`

The BBC heirarchy has always been riddled with arrogant, consdescending nobodies like them, people so assured of the rightness of their own opinions that they automatically assume the general public are sheep who need to herded in the right direction rather than individuals with their own preferences.

I can feel that way too Tony! The way Powell treated Colin Baker was awful. Firstly he tried to get Colin to come back just to do a `regeneration` scene. He then tried to get Colin to state it was his own decision to leave the show!
Colin has superb recollection of their meeting whereas Powell, when asked on the `trials` docu said he couldn't recall any of it! I don't know why he bothered to take part as most of the things he claimed were factually untrue!

Just watched the `Battlefield` DVD! Not too sure" Bit of a curate's egg for me! Probably need to view it again! Ben Aaaronovitch in the docu about the making and scripts was most certainly unhappy with the completed version. I'd agree with him when he says it should have never been expanded from 3 to 4eps! yeah, should have been 3 with the extra ep going to "Ghost Light" Then for me - Season 26 could have worked better.

Don't worry about bieng in `minorities` Tony! I should know - i'm a fan of Mel!
`Battlefield` while not really `sending me` is a lot better than many 80s `Who` for my tastes! I do agree with its author it should not have been stretched to four eps! Ben Aaronovitch really despises the finished product as i'm sure you saw on the `extra's` on the DVD!
Just read the `Ghost Light` book! Now, that is how the televised version should have been portrayed! It doesn't spoon-feed the reader every detailed exponation, but just enough is added to help the story really gell. Sadly, this 3 ep Studio, 3 Ep all location businness that JNT was forced into by the BBC budget & time restrictions- adversely affected both `Battlefield` (Forced into fourth ep) and `Ghost Light` (Pruned to three eps)

Re: Last Who You Watched
Those sort of restrictions really don't work on a show like Doctor Who, they stifle creativity. JNT and the rest really should be commended fo what they achieved under those conditions. The fact that stories like Ghost Light and Fenric are as good as they are given the budgetary restrictions is amazing.

Re: Last Who You Watched
Certainly! Thankfully, JNT had toned down his `Script Meddling` after the Saward Businness! The show had been so `squeezed` in the Grade/Powell era, that its a wonder its final three seasons stand up so well!
yes! I unclude season 24 as I thoroughly enjoy both `Paradise Towers` and `Delta` The latter really is a big favourite of mine!
Only `Silver Nemesis` of season 25 I felt didn't work out.
Sadly, for the reasons I gave, both `Battlefield` and `Ghost Light` were stalled from becoming even better! I'm afraid that I truly find `Survival` rather a let-down and a poor epitath for the 1963-89 years; but, of course they were so under the BBC cosh by then.

All of season 26 is awesome.
Saw The Ribos Operation last week. Sublime. Still one of my all time faves, so atmospheric, witty and so much fun!
Saw Tooth and Claw again on Thursday too. Excellent, def one of Tennant's best. With those two, Remembrance, Ghost Light, Talons and Fang Rock, seen some good ones of late!

I think the best part of The Ribos Operation for me is the Graff's descent into madness at the end as he walks off to his death shouting orders at subordinates who aren't there. Brilliant piece of acting, and the dubbed sounds of battle in his head make the scene perfect.

I just love how atmospheric it is, and how a few studio sets become another world thanks to the sheer quality of the dialogue.
Saw Rise of the Cybermen again last night. Oh dear. I guess my run of quality had to end sometime! Still, could have been worse - could have been New Earth (not likely!).

`Ribos` had a very powerful performance from Ian Cuthbertson, who, I think outshone Tom Baker in the `Give it all You've Got` arena! The Schrievenzale must be one of the oddest monsters in the show-along with Prentis Hancocks performance!
Acting honours for me - Timothy Bateson's `Binro`

Re: Last Who You Watched
By seasons 16 & 17, I think the show needed some `Larger-than-Life` Actors to balance against Tom Baker who was starting to `over-do` it a bit in my view(Though much of that overdoing worked well) Brian Blessed should have been in either seasons 16 or 17. Him and Tom going at it would have been a real showstopper!
I just watched "The Ark" Really enjoyed it -even the Monoids! Their shoot-out in Ep 4 was more fun than the showdown in the `Gunfighters` In fact, the Monoid one reminded me of a rather, similar in style shoot-out in a 1970s episode of "Michael Bentine's Potty Time".

I love `em! Factional in-fighting to boot! You could subtitle it with a cry from No 4 , "I Am Not A Number, I Am A Free Monoid!"
If you check the DVD closely, it strongly intimates the Monoids mouths are set in what in humans would bel the chest region. When No1 takes an Apple proffered by a human slave, he puts it right to his `chest` just behind his `medallion's box` The info tex states it is probably where their mouths must be-though you can't make this out in eps 1 & 2 when you can clearly see the Monoids chests; it must have been a new concept for eps 3 & 4.
I've watched the Monoid `Shoot-Out` about six times now - it's brilliant!

Yes! In fact, had not Grade & Powell stuck their oar in, Colin could have really suceeded in a `lighter` vein. I have to say that I took very much against his Doctor in both "Twin Dilemma" and what I watched of season 22; but by the latter stages of the "Trial" season he was improving very fast in my estimation!
I honestly believe that if not for the direction he was aimed in by JNT/Saward (though, sadly Colin seemed to lap up that direction at the time) he could well have played the 6th Doctor for a lot longer!

I will admit that Bonnie is a bit "Slap That Thigh!!" in style in the first ep (no 13 in the full season) "The Ultimate Foe" but, she had little experience of that type of television at the time and JNT only wanted her for her `name` and to scream a lot - something that soured her feelings about her time in the show as she intimated in later interviews!
I thought Bonnie improved in the `Vervoids` story which was her second story in real terms!
Note! For `Ghost Story` fans i'm posting one final one for this Christmas in Other Topics/ `Non Comics` section¬

Harking back to "The Ark" and one scene that impresses me is where, after the Monoid battle, which at first looks comical with dead Monoids strewn right across the Refusis landscape. Monoid 4 who has just finally finished off Monoid 1 wipes his brow and throws down his gun just as the Doctor, Dodo and one Guardian arrive!
I find that moment quite poignent as 4's actions are of someone who is quite sickened by the slaughter and he obviously wants no more of it! A very touching scene I thought.

Just watched "Seeds of Doom" and very much enjoyed it! Though this is said to be one of the most violent 1970s Dr Who's; I felt it wasn't gratuitous at all. Not one drop of blood that I could see-unlike season 22.
I had forgotten that `Boycie` (John Challis) was a `Heavy` in this story! Tony Beckley quite superb as the deranged Chase!

Just watched the `An Evening With Bonnie Langford` by the 'Whoovers` group! Lovely and charming as ever, Bonnie gave some very incisive insights into her time on Dr Who. She was most gracious about JNT!
She said she has very much enjoyed the `Big Finish` CD audios as `Mel` is now how Bonnie likes her-as opposed to her TV personna. States that Colin B and she are to do another!

Re: Last Who You Watched
Saw Stones of Blood again recently. Didn't like it anywhere near as much as last time. Perhaps I wasn't in the mood.
On the other hand, saw The Androids of Tara again last night. A hugely entertaining fairytale romantic swashbuckler, with loads of wit, colour, terrific performances (esp from Peter Jeffrey as Grendel and Tom on fantastic form) and a great climactic swordfight. Vastly preferred it to Stones this time, and 2nd best of the season after Ribos. Still a fave.
