I'm not actually sure it counts as new, if it was made in 1964...freedumbdclxvi wrote:getting ready to start the sensorites. very excited for new william hartnell who!

It is rather nice to have a story where the monster actually turns out to be meant to be a bloke in an unconvincing monster costume, at one point...

Bob was a great loss to the Whoniverse. I'd have loved to have seen his conclusion to The Trial of a Time Lord. It'd certainly have been better than the one we actually got.

Well, Pip and Jane were never the best Who writers, but they were really up against it there, trying to write a conclusion to someone else's story without including anything from the original writer's outline...codywillis1 wrote:That wouldn't have been difficult.

You know, the Terileptils are quite well-imagined and convincing aliens. It's just a shame their robots are so... fabulous.
Also, were Nyssa and Tegan sharing a bedroom in the Tardis?

They appear to have been, yes. But I'm sure they were just good friends. I mean, obviously living space is pretty restricted in an..umm..apparently...near infinite...dimensionally transcendental...
Come to think of it, why were they sharing a bedroom...?

Could've been worse. One of them could've been sharing with Adric
Maybe they were lonely (for friendship, I mean, so drag your mind out of the gutter, Ingram).

Awww, you're being mean to poor little Adric. Look at his innocent, boyish face. Could that face do anything horrible?
Richard Mace is a dude. Pity he didn't get made a permanent companion. A seventeenth-century light-fingered thespian would've made a brilliant addition to the show.

A Victorian actor-manager called Richard Mace, effectively the same character but in a different setting, appeared in three radio plays by Eric Saward which were broadcast on Radio 4. They were mystery dramas., and Mace was an amateur detective. They're worth seeking out.

Watching the Doctor suppress his evident desire to strangle Tegan is very funny.
I like Nyssa's velvet outfit with the puffed sleeves. Would you call it burgundy?

No, Burgundy is the colour of Tom Baker's season 18 outfit. Nyssa's is more like chocolate.

Nyssa is ace!* She made a robot explode when all Adric and Tegan were doing was titting around getting themselves captured repeatedly.
ETA: The colour of Nyssa's suit - burgundy?

One of my favourite Davison stories, and Doctor Who's last 'pure' historical story.

From my POV, immensely satisfying. The final couple of scenes brought a cheer to the lips of a million 13 year old Who fans in 1982...Lucy McGough wrote:Well, 'Black Orchid' was good. I wonder what 'Earthshock' will be like?

Has anyone read Matthew Waterhouse's autobiography, 'Blue Box Boy'? This guy has actually titled his autobiography in tribute to a character he played for about eighteen months, thirty years ago. What has he been doing in the meantime? Flipping burgers somewhere?

It's one of my favourite episodes from any series, frankly. I think it has probably overtaken Blink as my second favourite Doctor Who story, though there's still nothing that will ever come close to The Mind Robber, IMO.

The Mind Robber is my absolute favourite piece of televised Who, and possibly my favourite piece of sixties TV. It's so wonderfully surreal and imaginative!

Been having a bit of a season 17 marathon over the last week - City, Creature, Nimon, Shada... (waiting for the dvd for NOE)... just blissful fun. One of my most loved seasons, and I adore Tom and Lalla together.

I've been having a mini-marathon of my own, a season removed from you. Over the last couple of days I've watched Logopolis, the Keeper of Traken and Full Circle (in that order. I know, I know...).

I turned that off lol. Typical 70s Nation - i.e dull. It just lacks the wit and wild imagination and sense of joie de vive that makes me so enamoured of the rest of the year.

Nation wasn't always totally lacking in imagination. I'm watching the original Survivors at the moment, and it's a stunningly god piece of television-very hard hitting. Depressing as Hell, admittedly, but still bloody good telly.
