Silence in the Library. Pretty good, considering it's a Tennant.

Sadly, I am now watching The Happiness Patrol...
Which is making me moderately unhappy.

Re: Last Who You Watched
Had a double bill last night, of The Sontaran Experiment and The Hungry Earth 2 parter.
TSE is very enjoyable, a fun, atmospheric little quickie with a great villain.
Shame I can't say the same for THE. I wanted to like it this time, I really did, but its awful. The script is dire - dull, stupid and a nonsensical rehash of about half a dozen classic Who stories, all of which were a million times better than this. It's then made worse by the production - namely, the new Silurians, who are so far removed from the old ones as to be utterly unlike them, and who look less like prehistoric lizards than a generic race of aliens beamed in from Star Trek circa the mid 90s. They're laughable, frankly.
Last season was mostly great, and I love Smithy and co, but this is a pure oven-ready turkey.

While I have no specific problems with the story, sadly I do share your feelings about the Silurian redesign. Utterly unnecessary and just wrong. They just don't look like reptiles anymore!

Sorry - it was "Dr Who and the Creature from the Pit" on Radio 7:

Re: Last Who You Watched
I didn't know that was on! Mind you, I heard Tom reading 'The Giant Robot' on Radio 7 a few months back, and was less than impressed. And The Creature from the Pit is not a story you can do much to improve with nothing to use but your voice. Its entertainment value in its original televised form comes almost entirely from the performances of the guest cast. Take them away and you're just left with a very silly script.GBF wrote:Sorry - it was "Dr Who and the Creature from the Pit" on Radio 7:

Re: Last Who You Watched
Agreed - just goes to show that one may be great at one thing...but not another. Tom is the best TV Doctor, no doubt about that. But on the radio...naaaah!
Re: Last Who You Watched
On radio or CD, I'd say the best are Peter Davison and Paul McGann, probably because they're the most technically proficient voice actors (and, indeed, actors in general) of the various Doctors; the still living ones, anyway. Tom was a fantastic Doctor, never bettered, but he's not a great actor. He's just very, very good at playing Tom Baker, and fortunately Tom Baker is very like the Doctor.GBF wrote:Agreed - just goes to show that one may be great at one thing...but not another. Well said, that man. Baker reminds of that other 'big gob' - Brian Blessed. Neither of them are the best actors in the world, but probably the LOUDEST. Could you imagine Baker, Blessed and Pavarotti in the same room together??? 20.5 on the Richter!!!

Just watched Kinda for the first time since the original transmission in '82. One of the best Davison's , IMO, with some great supporting actors helping to make it very enjoyable. Possibly my favourite S19 story.

Re: Last Who You Watched
I watched it last week (yes, I bought the Mara Tales box set, too). Great story! Simon Rouse is absolutely wonderful as Hindle-his descent into insanity is quite chilling. Strange, to think of that thin, deranged looking young man ending up as Jack Meadows in The Bill...kembel wrote:Just watched Kinda for the first time since the original transmission in '82. Because a) it doesn't have Simon Rouse in it, b) it does have Martin Clunes in it, and c) it's a sequel, and therefore by definition crap (the honourable exception to that rule being The Empire Strikes Back, of course).kembel wrote:...why isn't Snakedance half as good as Kinda?

And of course, unlike Richard Todd, poor Martin Clunes didn't have the benefit of Matthew Waterhouse's coaching in how to act for the camera...kembel wrote:a) I guess so, nor Nerys Hughes

Was gonna watch Genesis lst night but turned it off 2 and a bit eps in. Rather dull and very overrated, like so many Hinchcliffe stories.

Just watched the Comic Relief specials on YT. They were better than the Xmas special! Very funny.
Really looking forward to the new season, more than I have for a very long time.

Anyway, I thought the bloke in Terrahawks was pretty good, too. Didn't have quite the range of Captain Scarlet of course, but nobody's perfect.

Battlefield gets a lot of flak from the, ahem, wonderful world of fandom, but its fine by me. A bit silly in places, but this is Who we're talking about.
I've just finished the last part of Pertwee's 'The Mutant's, and I have to say it remains my least favourite of his. It's the only one of his six parters I'd like to see shortened down to four parts.

I actually quite like the Mutants, though it is overlong. Rick James can't act, though.kembel wrote:Battlefield gets a lot of flak from the, ahem, wonderful world of fandom, but its fine by me. A bit silly in places, but this is Who we're talking about.

Battlefield is fab. Who fandom is full of utter mugs.
Frontier in Space. Disappointing ending, but its a very fun ride.
Planet of the Daleks. Turned it off on the grounds that it sucks. Ditto Planet of Evil. Yawnarama.

I agree, on both counts.codywillis1 wrote:Battlefield is fab. Who fandom is full of utter mugs.
Planet of Evil does have a saving grace, in that it really shows Sarah as both proactive and intelligent. How many other companions would have realized they could escape the base because the power levels weren't high enough to keep it sealed?

I prefer Romana to her alter ego, Lalla Ward, though. Bitter, sniping, arrogant and egocentric are just her better points...

Hmm, maybe Sarah, Nyssa, Zoe and Liz Shaw are the only four who would have realised this.
I agree about Romana II, and Romana I might have realised but have refused to do something so undignified as climbing through a window. Tegan would have spent so much time moaning and complaining that the chance to escape would have passed, and Jamie would just refuse for fear of running into the Giant Beastie outside
