Gene Colan September 21st 1926-June 23rd 2011 RIP
Gene Colan, whose moody, atmospheric art graced such strips as Iron Man, Daredevil, Batman, Howard the Duck, Night Force, Wonder Woman and Tomb of Dracula, died yesterday aged 84. A sad loss to the industry.

Re: Gene Colan September 21st 1926-June 23rd 2011 RIP
I've been posting on a few forums about this sad loss.
I've lost count of the number of issues I've read that we're lucky enough to be graced by 'The Dean's' unique style of artwork. A style all his own, Gene could combine both dynamism and an understated moodiness often in the same panel! He was one of the few 'earlier' Marvel artist who Stan Lee didn't try and get to ape Kirby. What would be the point? Gene was his own man who reveled in the freedom of the Marvel method and produced some of the best work to come out of The House Of Ideas.
I love his work, especially on Iron Man, Doc Strange, Howard the Duck, Wonder Woman, but two titles stand out from the crowd by a clear mile. First, his wonderful collaboration with writer Marv Wolfman and inker Tom Palmer on Tomb of Dracula produced a truly breathtaking title that is still held in high regard today, and is even better appreciated when read, (as I did in the wonderful early days of British Marvel) in glorious black and white.
And last, but most importantly for me in a book that I've been following for almost 40 years now, with a character having his fair share of some of the top names in the industry over the years, Gene Colan will always be THE definitive Daredevil artist.
I have an interview with Gene on DVD where he talks about his technique and outlook, conducted circa 2003. His biggest regret, apparently, was being so engrossed with his work, spending long hours in front of the drawing board, that he often missed out spending time with his wife or seeing his children and grandchildren grow up. Although of no solice to the family he leaves behind, I'd like to think that an 'extended family' of thousands across the world reaped the benefit of this dedication and I for one am going to treasure each and every bit of his work for many years to come.
RIP Gene, and thanks.

He seemed to be on Daredevil forever, didn't he? I think he took over about two dozen issues in and stayed for about eighty issues, plus the entire 70 issue run of Tomb of Dracula! If only artists today had that kind of commitment...

Nice one. And nice to see Gene's work was enjoyed worldwide and not just in the English speaking countries.Barry_Allen wrote:I couldn't agree more Tony and Glenn, we (italian comic fans of komix.it) hosted a small obit on our italian forum too, if you like, you can find it here!
