DVD Release News
Shada/30 Years set (it's the 92 edit of Shada, which I'm very pleased by as I love it ) and Reign of Terror in January. Zygons in June.
Nothing else bar Ark in Space special editions and - wait for it, as this is the bit that ticks me off - Aztecs. Which, lo and behold, you've not much choice but to buy if you want to see the rediscovered ep of Galaxy 4. Oh 2entertain, you shameless ripoff merchants!

Finally, `Terror of the Zygons` is coming out! It was the one season 13 show I missed completely back in Aug 75.

It's a cracker.
Apparently there will be ones in April/May, just not announced as yet. Speculation is they're animations but not being announced so as not to overshadow Reign.

Its a pity that `Spearhead From Space` special edition (Due in 2013) will only be on Blue Ray. It will have a tribute to Jon Pertwee and an `obituary` special extra to Caroline John.

Re: DVD Release News
This has really annoyed me, too. I've already bought The Aztecs on both VHS and DVD, I have no interest in the Special Edition and no desire to buy the same story for a third time just to get Air Lock. That's a dirty trick.codywillis1 wrote:Shada/30 Years set (it's the 92 edit of Shada, which I'm very pleased by as I love it ) and Reign of Terror in January. Zygons in June.

Very dirty. Where will The Underwater Menace go, on a re-release of The Mind Robber?

Nah, more likely the 94th re-release of Tomb of the Cybermen.

It's all getting a bit silly, now...
And over on the 'Missing Episodes' site's forum, people associated with the DVD releases are becoming rather defensive. Apparently, we should all be happy to buy the same stories several times over so that they can afford to create more animations and extras that almost nobody watches.

Re: DVD Release News
Animations! Hmm! Those on `The Invasion` didn't seem that good to me and they made a mistake with Zoe's outfit on first half of first episode.

Well, I want the animations! Why wouldn't you? It's the only way we're going to get to "see" 100-odd eps again. I'm more interested in seeing Bill and Pat animated than New Who...

Re: DVD Release News
Well, some people on other sites are suggesting that the cash from the Special Edition of The Aztecs could be used to pay to animate more missing episodes so we should all knuckle under and buy it without complaint. Seems a bit of a leap to me...codywillis1 wrote:Well, I want the animations! Why wouldn't you? It's the only way we're going to get to "see" 100-odd eps again. Yes, I'd say so. Doesn't all the money we've paid them for the last ten releases count, then?

Re: DVD Release News
I didn't mean to imply that `animated` scenes should not be attempted - just that for me, the Invasion scenes just didn't seem that good -and the mistake with Zoe's attire was quite avoidable, had they checked the publicity shots from episode one.

Even I noticed the Zoe wardrobe malfunction. Though aside from that, I quite liked the animation (and appreciated it being in black & white)...

Re: DVD Release News
It's all getting a bit stupid now. I'm pretty sure there's nothing in Ark to justify a special edition (I watched it this afternoon and spent most of the time feeling sorry for Ian Marter) and I'm damned sure ther was nothing at all to justify the Five Doctors special edition.
Luckily I'm not a completist and missing episodes are at best a passing interest - except for that last episode of Tenth planet, of course - and I'm sure eventually we'll get a Lost in Time 2 set in any event.

Re: DVD Release News
On a side note, I wouldn't mind Zoe having a wardrobe malfunction.
Um, the Five Doctors SE is about the only that was justifiable, seeing that it was only the (godawful) extended VHS version that had been released the first time, and not the original, proper version!

Re: DVD Release News
Steve Roberts has declared that those complaining about the release of Air Lock on The Aztecs SE are complaining about nothing, since the only alternative would have been to release this single episode alone for a tenner (which it obviously wouldn't) and anyway, we can all recoup some of the money by selling our old Aztecs DVDs on ebay (which currently has 49 used copies for sale from 99p upwards). Remind me never to hire this guy to handle my P.R...

Re: DVD Release News
I must confess my ignorance - who is Steve Roberts please?
On subject of re-re releases. Claws of Axos - unless eps 2 & 3 are `much` better than earlier release-can't see point of it! I certainly wouldn't buy it for the `extra` extra of Toby Hadoke visiting John Levene - to my mind -that's a good reason `not` to buy it! By the way- I knew Toby years ago (though not closely) there is a great Dr Who related story about him! (it's definatly not rude!)

Re: DVD Release News
There's enough stories out there I haven't seen in any form yet that it'll be awhile before the Special Editions have any appeal, I'm afraid.
(I had been wondering why Axos and Aztecs were flooding e-bay. I guess this expains it. Varos and the Three Doctors are also getting very common and thus cheap.)
And I must admit i didn't notice the issue with Zoe's wardrobe in Invasion. I'd have to say that it may not have been a mistake though - there might have been a design reason that made it difficult for whatever reason.
The quality of animation is unlikley to be much 'better', in future releases - this isn't a project that is attracting Pixar type budgets (and indeed depending on what you read even doing Invasion bankrupted Cosgrave Hall). I have no idea what the sales figures are for the Hartnell/Troughton dvds but I'll bet they don't sell as well as colour episodes and that Invasion sold less even than that.

Re: DVD Release News
It does rather annoy me that they're releasing all these tweaked and supposedly "improved" versions of previously released stories when there are still others unreleased. I know some of the unreleased stories need restoration work, but where is Terror of the Zygons?

It's out in June. Personally I liked The Invasion animation just fine, though Reign is in a different style. Maybe you'll prefer that one.

Re: DVD Release News
The Thetamation guys (they who are doing the animations) have put up a showreel that includes that looks like clips of an animated Reign, 10th Planet (Hartnell in the snow) and what some are claiming is a clip from a full colour Power.
Make of this what you will....

Re: DVD Release News
Picked up The Reign of Terror dvd today. Now THIS should be interesting.
Apparently there's going to be an announcement about animations at a convention in Australia later this month. Even more interestingly, there are now rumours that Big Finish - who have been involved in the Reign animation - may be intending to animate some of their stuff. One of their head honchos has given an interview saying they'll have a big announcement later this year, and that they have "13 years worth of what are essentially soundtracks for films and animations". Ooooooh!

I would be MUCH more interested in BF's output if I could actually WATCH them. I know some people like audio drama, but I'm a very visual person and without something to focus my eyes on my attention tends to wander....

I'm very much the opposite, I'm afraid. Not that I don't like visual drama, but I find radio/audio drama much more relaxing. And in sci-fi, the effects are always better on audio.

Re: DVD Release News
Dan Hall has also apparently said "never say never" to a question about full missing stories being animated, which could be interpreted a number of different ways but which still seems a shift from "we can only afford 2".
There is supposed to be another big announcement at an Oz convention next weekend, so what that will be is anyone's guess (Ice Warriors? TUM? Moonbase? Crusade? Something wilder?)

Re: DVD Release News
Not really. There has been a deliberate policy of not leaking any information about anything Doctor Who related since Moffat took over, I think in order to preserve the element of surprise wherever possible. Trouble is, over the previous five years they'd deliberately bombarded us with information continuously and I think some fans now have a hard time dealing with being kept in the dark as a result.codywillis1 wrote:Nobody seems to really know. Re: DVD Release News
There's supposedly going to be some sort of other animation announcement - but NOT about The Ice Warriors - next week. And then the week after an announcement about The Ice Warriors.
I would LOVE to see TUM get the treatment along with the recovered ep of course, though I'm still going to be miffed if TIW isn't. It would seem a very odd move.

Maybe, but it does seem odd that they're putting the VHS recon on (even as only an extra, as has been said) if so. Who knows, though? I'm still hoping for Power lol.

Re: DVD Release News
OK, I'm now officially eating my words regarding The Aztecs Special Edition. I've just watched the whole of disc two, including the Galaxy 4 recon and the gloriously intact 'Air Lock', and I have to say, I feel it was worth the £14.00 I paid for it even if it was officially only an "extra". The Rills, once you can actually see them, are wonderful creations, and the whole story is much better than I remembered from the audio CD release. I also thoroughly enjoyed the 1969 documentary on the Spanish conquest and the feature on Doctor Who toys (a distressing number of which I realised I actually own).

There is actually rather more on that DVD than I'd previously expected-the recovered episode has been integrated into a full recon of the story with a running time of 60 minutes. I was quite impressed.
