Missing Episode Rumours

Unless you've been living in an ice cave on Pluto for the past week, it can hardly have escaped your attention that rumours are flying about a potentially imminent recovery of an unspecified number of previously missing early Doctor Who episodes. In fact, this rumour has been quietly bubbling away for over a year, but it's been picking up steam and it's now gone viral. But, do we believe it? A lot of the speculation is obvious bollocks, but a surprising number of usually reliable sources (and even some less likely individuals, like former companion Anneke Wills) seem to be hinting at the same thing: there's something out there, but the BBC hasn't necessarily got its hands on it yet. Personally, I'm now starting to think there's no smoke without fire-but if negotiations are indeed being conducted between the BBC and some private individual, I can't see all this publicity helping one little bit...

I'm sceptical (so nothing new there... ).

They mentioned it at my comic book shop, so there you go! Rumor CONFIRMED.

The Missing Episodes board is deleting threads about the story as soon as they appear...

I know, it's craziness. The Beeb have just released a statement that manages to confirm nothing and yet not actually categorically deny anything at the same time. All this spin is making me dizzy.

Terrific. We've now passed beyond rumours about missing episodes, and into rumours about missing episode rumours. Now we have conspiracy theories floating around to the effect that the missing episode rumours were all a massive hoax designed to discredit Ian Levine.

Who, er, didn't actually start the rumours or even get involved until pretty late in the day... 

And it is now starting to look like the rumour that it was a hoax was in fact a hoax in itself.

Much to the dismay of certain people, it seems. Paul Vanezis has just closed down the rumours thread on the Missing Episodes Forum and seems to feel the subject should not be discussed any further. If it is, he may well close down those discussions, too.

Just to put that a bit more plainly: people are apparently not allowed to discuss the possibility of recovering missing episodes on a forum dedicated to the discussion of missing episodes.

That place is basically the laughing stock of fandom now. And when you're treading on territory normally reserved for GB, you know you're in trouble!   

Ah, but they don't care about the opinions of fandom. Fandom is silly. They are the sane and reasonable ones, you see.

By which, of course, I mean dry, humourless, po-faced and cynical. Actual enjoyment of the hobby is forbidden, as is hope.
