Mike Mignola Variant Cover for Rocket Raccoon #1 Cancelled...Because Nobody Told Mike He Was Doing It!
When Marvel announced their new Rocket Raccoon book, one retailer incentive was a variant cover drawn by Mike Mignola, who drew Rocket's last series in the eighties. Retailers would get a Mignola cover for every fifty regular copies of the first issue that they ordered. Sadly, they have almost immediately had to retract that particular incentive-because it appears nobody at Marvel editorial actually bothered to ask Mignola if he'd draw the cover, and he has declined to do so. Marvel have now apologised for the "miscommunication".

Maybe they thought he was telepathic, like Professor X or Emma Frost. Does he look like Emma Frost?

Mike Mignola? Not noticeably. Though I haven't seen him in a silver boob tube.Lucy McGough wrote:Maybe they thought he was telepathic, like Professor X or Emma Frost. Does he look like Emma Frost?

I'm not surprised he declined. It's insulting when people decide things about you without you.

Y'know, Marvel really should have thought about this a little more before announcing it . . . it's not like the guy doesn't have other things he does. Has there at least been any word if Marvel "thought" they had communicated with Mignola but instead were texting / emailing somebody who was pretending to be him or something?

By the sound of it, it was more a case of someone in marketing assuming someone else had contacted him when they hadn't.

Hope they're not that lackadaisical about changing their smoke alarm batteries.
