Disney Bans Non US Originated Marvel Comics

Post by tony ingram on Wed May 11, 2011 8:20 am

Marvel's new owners, Disney, have issued an edict that from now on, all Marvel Comics content must originate from the US. This effectively ends a tradition of UK originated Marvel titles dating back to the 1970s, and will undoubtedly have serious repercussions for Panini UK, who currently hold the licence to reprint Marvel material here and publish a number of UK originated titles for younger readers which will now have to be cancelled and their creators laid off.

This can't mean IMMEDIATELY, Tony - people sign contracts. How it affects Panini can only happen sometime down the line...but it's not good news all the same.

It's extremely bad news. It can only harm the industry by closing off yet another route into comics for British creators-and it will lead to less British kids getting into Marvel as there will no longer be any all-ages titles published in Britain to ease them in. Not that I expect Disney care.

My report on this (already on the Crikey! website) is now up on the Broken Frontier news site, too. I intend to send a letter of protest to Marvel. Sorry, but this has me really riled.

An absolute disgrace. Though at least Panini still seem to be able to publish the reprint material-I was wondering if Marvel would pull the licence altogether. Panini and Disney are rivals, after all. It's particularly galling, since Panini have just begun to resurrect some of the old Marvel UK characters in their books!

Meanwhile, Panini UK's website has been down for the last 24 hours. Curious...

Also here in Italy we are wondering what will happen now, considering that Panini has published Marvel comic books and followed home video activities in 7 major countries for several years now, but Walt Disney of Italy is a very powerful publishing entity too, although this was more true in the Nineties, with the success of the Witch franchise; since then they have collected a lot of publishing failures so maybe now they could take over Marvel publishing activities for themselves, and try to grow up again...

Yes, they used to have two kid-friendly monthlies with gadget, Marvel Heroes (seven issues published) and L'incredibile Spider-Man (16 issues) similar to their Uk counterparts, in fact they used to print Italian originated stories for those magazines, I remember several ones from the artist Marco Cecchetto (who has drawn some stories directly also for Marvel, like Squadron Supreme, Daredevil, Punisher...since then).
Also, they produced original 8 page stories of Spidey for the Italian catholic weekly "Il Giornalino" from the italian team of Stefano Vietti (writer of sci-fi fiction and of the sci-fi monthly comic Nathan Never here in Italy) and Marco Cecchetto (again)! These stories hasn't been yet collected, although Panini editor Lupoi promised in Lucca 2007 (!) they would have realised two volumes with all these stories when they would have been really concluded, and this cicle of stories concluded last January in "Il Giornalino", so maybe we'll see the first of these two before the end of the year, if he hasn't changed his mind about that, these last years.... Neutral

And if Marvel allow them to be collected, of course. Interesting-so, it's not just the UK that potentially loses out on original material thanks to Disney's petty attitude...

What other countries does Panini publish Marvel material in?

When Disney bought out Marvel a while back, I went off on rants on a few blogs, firing off dire warnings and portents of doom. Smile Looks like I was right.

I'm a firm believer that huge corporations are inherently evil in nature. They exist for one reason only - to make a relatively tiny group of obscenely greedy individuals richer and richer and richer. And they are totally obsessed and consumed by legal technicalities such as "protecting" their copyright and trademarks.

When you mix huge corporate entities with the creative worlds of comics and others, only one word comes to mind - T-R-O-U-B-L-E!

That'd work for me. The joys of top-tier American capitalism - everyone is willing to sell their soul to the devil if the money's right. It's a cancer at the heart of modern western civilization. The dystopian global corporate society envisioned in RoboCop is alive and well, and already here, except as it's more subtle, most people just don't know it yet.

I think it's very telling that the glory days at Marvel were before they first flogged the company off to the big corporate parasites. Marvel has never been the same since.

It's absolutely criminal and tragic that so many kids all over the world are going to lose out on these Panini Marvel reprints because Disney are such a bunch of a$$holes. It's hard enough to get young kids to read comics as it is these days, without taking away the comics that they do read. I simply can't see young Spidey fans switching to reading Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse comics, if that's what Disney is hoping.

I know Panini are a competitor of Disney's, but this is spiteful, thoughtless behaviour by thick, compassionless corporates. Could they not have arranged a new publishing contract with Panini re: Marvel reprints instead?

I think the reprints themselves are safe enough-it's the UK originated material Panini produced that has been dropped. Trouble is, that was the stuff that was actually aimed at kids rather than teenagers and older, and there's nothing much to replace it!

So, three years later, where does all this stand these days?
(Being in the US, I'm a bit clueless on the workings of European comic books.)

Did Panini find a replacement for the Marvel / Disney material?

Panini are still publishing Marvel material, but only reprints of American stuff. The ban was on the production of new material featuring Marvel characters.

No fair! Captain Britain should be produced in the UK. The clue is in the name Razz

I mean, it's not like we don't have any decent comics creators. One or two of us have been found to be fairly adequate.
