The Wedding of River Song Empty The Wedding of River Song

Post by tony ingram Sat Oct 01, 2011 8:28 pm

Well, we've seen it, it's gone, what did we think?

For me, it wasn't the best episode of this series but since the series as a whole has been outstanding that isn't anything to be ashamed of. I thought the Doctor's means of cheating death was totally unexpected, and of course, the oldest question could never have been anything else! Razz

I am rather saddened that they killed off the Brigadier, though...

A very enjoyable finale, for the most part (though, like the season as a whole, not as good as last years). Amy getting even with Kovarian was way cool (though since it didn't really happen, I guess she could be back). The call about the death of the Brig was very moving. The solution to the Doctor's "death" was laugh out loud funny and we really should have seen it coming!

We should. It was obvious, with hindsight; but then, a lot of things are obvious with hindsight. And with all the discussion online about this series, I don't think I've heard one person guess it would be that...

I did kind of see the ending coming... but rejected it! I thought "If the Tesselator people love the Doctor so much they could turn into him and take his place... nah they'd still be sacrificing several hundred lives to save one". Not thinking that such a machine would be laser proof XD. I didn't think that he'd actually be inside it though.

I think he had to be inside it because he had to be physically there, on the beach, and get shot. he just didn't necessarily have to be hurt...

I put my vote in on the top of the thread! Must own up _ I could barely follow it.

Afraid the second half of the season left me rather bewildered;but that's obviously down to my own shortcomings!

Had a chat with my partner Charlotte-neither of us got very much out of it and we'll leave it alone and hope it may change again to something we might enjoy more!

I'm certainly enjoying the DVD's from seasons 12, 13 & 14 very much indeed! I only sporadically watched those years- Found Tom Baker hard to like back then! But today; really enjoying him in those seasons!

Well, at least you've discovered some Doctor Who that's new to you which you're enjoying, even if it is thirty five years old! I love that era myself, I still think season 14 is one of the most consistently high quality seasons Who ever had.

That's right Tony! Charlotte and I are really enjoying watching two eps a night! "Genesis of the Daleks" was fantastic as was "Planet of Evil" We will be watching the first two of "Deadly Assassin" tomorrow evening! I believe that one now has the full freeze frame end of ep 3 reinstated ! Am I correct there ?

No, it isn't. I'm fairly clever and I couldn't follow it either.

I do recall it was one of the stories I watched at the time! I feel the so called `voilence` of the Hichcliffe/Holmes era has had a `bad press` as they say! I don't feel the end of ep thee of "Deadly assassin" is anywhere as disturbing (in my view) as two policemen in "Terror of the Autons" bieng unmasked as Autons!

I can't really judge that well as I havn't seen that much of their era yet - but so far; I think Hichcliffe and Holmes generally got it right regarding `voilence` or unsettling images, whereas in contrast in "Terror of the Autons" Barry Letts, I feel, made a terrible blunder - not just the Police/Autons but other aspects of that story in that he overstepped the mark as I see it!

Charlotte and I just thoroughly enjoyed on DVD "The Deadly Assassin" I only caught two eps of it back in `76` Really loved it! Charlotte thought it very good indeed!

We didn't find the `freeze-frame` unsettling! Maybe back in 76-but today?

For `bad taste` I still find "Terror of the Autons" a clear leader! The one Dr Who story I actually agree with Mrs Whitehouse about!! Oh goodness!

Really looking foreward to getting more DVD's from seasons2, 13 & 14!

All but the Three "Genesis" "Planet-Evil" & "Deadly Assassin" I mentioned earlier (And I need a new copy of "Planet of Evil") I'm bidding on `Talons of Weng Chiang" just now!

I havn't seen these since the 70s and I missed about half the Tom Baker early years back then! I have only seen excerpts from "Talons" on U.Tube or in some ads for Dr DVDs . This era (1975-77) is one that i'm only now really re-discovering! So, hopefully, many good stories to view!

Though I watched Dr Who from the first ep back in Nov 63 when I was 8 Years & 2 Months old, i've never been a avid viewer!

Back in the 60s I used to not bother with the `Historicals` after two eps of "Marco Polo". Each `Historical` I would be out playing on our street! I missed first two eps of the `Time Meddler` till David Newey told me it had a character with another time machine in it!

I watched many of the Pat Troughton ones-though I gave up on the last three eps or so of the `Space Pirates`.

Season Seven was `awesome` truly loved it-but two eps into "Terror of The Autons" I left the show well alone only catching one or two eps in two years and watching the Christmas omnibus (or was it Easter?) of `The Daemons` and `The Sea Devils` Neither impressed me!

Came back for the `Three Doctors` and followed till Pertwee's departure!

Then found Tom Baker so OTT in `Robot` I missed virtually all seasons 12 to 16. Watched season 17 "Destiny of Daleks" & "City of death" coz ITV were on strike- found Baker & Lalla Ward- awful!! Oh dear! However! Loved `Horns of Nimon` because Graham Crowden became the only person in Dr Who history to `Out-Baker` Baker!

Viwed sporadicly during the 1980s. I quite liked the `oddball` stories that Andrew Cartmel was promoting when he was script editor- for my sins!

I only caught up with Seasons 8 & 9 via `video swapping` in the late 80s. I can't personally rate these seasons highly at all! "Terror of the Autons" I still find truly awful; and the `Holy Grail` of the Pertwee era "The Daemons" just nothing special to me at all.

I did like the first `Peladon` story from season 9. Outside of that in the latter Pertwee era -just the `Green Death`and `Invasion of the Dinosaurs` that I really enjoy a lot.

Pertwee has never been a favourite of mine. He seemed to me to be playin the Doctor as a completely dfferent character to the rest, much more of an establishment figure, which I don't think he should ever be. I agree with you on season 7 though, definitely the best of that era.

The `Cozy` Unit era doesn't really do much for me-especially when the Brigadier becomes little more than part of a `double-act` with Doctor 3.

I just watched the `Fear Factor` extra on the `Deadly Assassin`DVD and Barry Letts (Who sadly, did look very ill) and Terrance Dicks did acknowledge their error in `Terror of the Autons`

When I was a bit involved with Dr Who fandom in the mid to late 80s their was a bit of what I can only term `enmity` towards the Letts/Dicks 1971-74 era! Some of it was rather cutting unfortunatly!

I think Barry Letts had to put his own stamp on the programme, even though I didn't care for that `style` but the lambasting he got? I certainly think he deserved certain criticisms over `Terror of the Autons` but some of the stuff going down was not nice.

Similary, there was a big `push` for the Graham Williams era to be reevalued into a sort of `golden era` It all goes in ebbs and floes I suppose!

Personally, I am only now discovering the strength of the Hinchcliff / Holmes era!

Just found the `Soldeed` death scene from "Horns of Nimon" (Graham Crowden really going for it!) According to the "A Brief History of Time Travel" he thought it was only a camera rehearsal!

Mind you- I've got a Crowden beauty in a `Mystery and Imagination` episode "Curse of the Mummy" where Graham and actor Donald Churchill really go at it hammer& tongs! `Ham` flying everywhere!

Some sad news! Actor George Baker who was in `Full Circle` sadly passed on.

That is sad, i really used to like him as Inspector Wexford. A great actor.

Fandom has always been subject to these schisms, and certain eras do seem to come in and out of fashion. I remember when actually admitting you like the Williams era was an invitation to withering scorn and ridicule. The attitude was that Doctor Who had to be taken terribly seriously, so any story that was obviously played for laughs was best brushed under the carpet.

I always try to make clear when I voice my `likes` `dislikes` that its just my personal view and not anything set in stone! The show has always gone through changes and styles so there is something for just about anyone who wants to choose an era to latch on to.

I must admit that the last season hasn't meant much to me - but obviously many fans and viewers really enjoyed it-so for them it was great!

Wer'e off now for the weekend! cheers!
