An Open Letter from Laura Siegel

Post by tony ingram on Tue Oct 16, 2012 1:47 pm

Jerry Siegel's daughter, Laura Siegel-Larson, has written an open letter to Superman fans on the subject of the ongoing Superman copyright case, in which she effectively accuses Warner Bros of orchestrating a dirty tricks campaign aimed against her family and their lawyer, and stops just short of accusing them of stealing documents relating to the case. It seems this battle is not over yet...

I think I read somewhere that WB has, like, a third of all the money ever printed. Why don't they just pay the lady? I mean, for crying out loud. . . .

Yet another reason I can't buy from DC.

Because if they did, then they would no longer have a third of all the money ever printed. Honestly Commander, the questions you ask... Cool

I didn't know Lois Lane was modelled on Mr Siegel's wife.

Predictable, and slightly depressing. The Siegels made a poor choice of lawyer, it seems.

I must admit I have no strong feelings one way or the other about this. The result always seemed inevitable to me and whilst I probably OUGHT to care more I just don't, I'm afraid.

It certainly isn't going to affect the fact that have never bought a Supes comic and have no plans to see the new movie either. But neither will it stop me buying those Dc titles which I am still reading.

I think I just have a tendency to always come down on the side of the little guy rather than the big Corporation. Though I must admit, for some reason I didn't have the same sympathy for Gary Friedrich over the Ghost Rider thing (Mostly because a) He was selling Mike Ploog's art without his consent and b) He didn't actually create the basic Ghost Rider concept, the name or the blazing skull motif anyway).

My personal view is that in effect the Court had little option. That doesn't mean DC shouldn't do the decent thing and give the family a hefty split of royalties.

I just have that strange feeling that more nergy will be spent bemoaning the verdict than doing anything constructive to put pressure on Dc to do the right thing.

Lack of sympathy for Gary Friedrich largely comes down to the fact that he's a putz. The same applied back in the day when Fleischer sued Ellison and The Comics Journal.

I was previously unaware of the precise meaning of the word 'putz', but having Googled it, it does seem curiously appropriate in this instance.

Exactly. People with money and power get what they want, almost always. Sad.

I know! Has a poor person ever won a court case against a rich person? Like, ever?

Lady Justice might be blind, but she can still feel a fiver as it's being slipped into her hand. . . .

Ever? Of course. But, it certaily seems an almost overwhelming likelihood that they'll lose any given case.
