Some Really Nice 1950s Young Marvelman Art
Just found these pages while going through some old annuals, and thought I'd share them. Beautiful art, in my opinion.

Oh, I love these! They're so colourful and innocent. Well-executed too. I especially like the idea of Mr Pickwick being a real person, bless his cotton socks and ever-present gaiters. The Pickwick Papers is an absolute joy of a book.

I think this stuff is, from a purely technical point of view, head and shoulders above most modern comics. These people were artists.

It's like something out of a children's book. It's wonderful.

Well technically, I guess it is something out of a children's book, given that YM's readers would have been kids and British annuals are traditionally hardbacks...Sam_Vimes wrote:It's like something out of a children's book. It's wonderful.

Comics. . .for CHILDREN? Don't be ridiculous, Tony.

Back in the mists of history, when men wore bowler hats, women knew their place, faggots were spiced meatballs in onion gravy and the lower classes kept their coal in the bathtub because they didn't know it had any other use , comics were indeed for children, in Britain at least. Then, on a stormy November night when Mars was in conjunction with Uranus and strange lights haunted the sky over Northampton, Alan Moore was born and the innocence of a nation died...Sam_Vimes wrote:Comics. . .for CHILDREN?
