Veteran American artist Al Williamson died on Sunday June 12th aged 78. He had been working in comics since 1948, and in the course of his long career spent time at virtually every major US comics company and a variety of newspapers, drawing the likes of Kid Colt for Atlas (the forerunner to Marvel), assisting Burne Hogarth on Tarzan, drawing Flash Gordon and spending almost 13 years as the artist of Secret Agent Corrigan. He also worked on Star Wars comics and newspaper strips alongside his frequent collaborator, writer Archie Goodwin, and later reinvented himself as an inker on strips such as Spider Girl for Marvel.

Great artist. I'll remember him for the great black and white reprints I read in the old 'Empire Strikes Back; Marvel weekly, work which you've copied above, Tony. I prefer the black and white reprints in the weekly somehow, a tremendous, evocative adaptation of what is at times quite a dark film.

Years later, I loved his inking over Romita Jnr on the great Nocenti written Daredevil. Nocenti/Romita Jnr/Williamson remains to this day my favourite creative team on DD.

Of course the above just scratches the surface on what was a long and brilliant career.

He's not one of the better known names in the business these days, but he really ought to be. One of those artists who never did a bad job and who often made quite an impression without his name ever really registering because he didn't court publicity...
