I thought some of the motivation was a bit skew-whiff. People were angry and aggressive because Mark Gatiss wanted them to be, so that the plot would happen.

No, it's called "bad writing." It wasn't convincing or organic.

I kind of agree. I enjoyed it, but it was a plot we've seen before, and while it was good it wasn't anything more than that.
I don't expect every one to be a classic, though.
