Jo Grant is back-or will be, soon!
According to a press release from the BBC Press Office today, the upcoming fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures sees Sarah team up with (in the same two episodes) both the 11th Doctor and veteran companion Katy Manning, once again playing Jo Grant! The two episodes are written by Russell T Davies.

Well, I'd dispute 'scantily clad'. Not in that one, anyway. There tends to be about the same amount of flesh on show in any Essex shopping centre on a summers day.Lucy McGough wrote:Oh look. A scantily-clad woman. Gosh. I've never seen THAT before.

Nah, he did write a few good 'uns, to be fair. It's the awfulness of a lot of others - and extreme awfulness of them - together with some very questionable character decisions that undermines his era so much for me.

Same here, Cody. I just thought it remiss of us not to acknowledge that he did do some good things.

By which, of course, I mean he frequently came across as a raving egomaniac and his elaborate schemes invariably fell apart at the end...

RTD INSULTED FANDOM BY CALLING THEM MING MONGS, A TERM WHICH REFLECTS MENTAL RETARDATION. IN SHORT HE WAS INSULTING THE DISABLED COMMUNITY AND THE BLOODY BBC LET HIM GET AWAY WITH IT. HE OPENLY WAS BEING DISCRIMINATORY AND FOR THAT SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A DRESSING DOWN. WHAT HE DID WAS EQUALLY IF NOT MORE OFFENSIVE THAN ROSS AND THAT HAIRY GUY.

what does Que? mean
Mong, or Mongoloid, is derogatory term for a person affected by mental retardation. Ming Mongs was a conmen insult at school.

Re: Jo Grant is back-or will be, soon!
Neither. As I've said, I don't think the present team (or the BBC) have a real grasp of what they have. In my opinion the show should be darker. It has to be - look at the subject matter! I don't like the current 'quirkyness' of the characters especially when they're (supposedly) confronting such creatures as the Daleks. After all, didn't Terry Nation base his 'Dalek' on a German Panzer tank - solid iron, ruthless, deadly, terrifying and almost unbeatable (Jack Kirby did the same with Doctor Doom - Kirby himself faced the SS Panzers in Bastogne in late 1944/early 1945). It's time the Doctor grew up before it's too late. Lucy argued that Doctor Who is a 'Kids' show - maybe it was. But it's time (!) the show grew up. I was eight when it was aired in 1963. Now, I'm not one of those numpties who claim they hid behind the settee when the Daleks appeared, but they were like nothing I'd seen before. I was eight and they didn't scare me so much as blow my mind. The potential has always been there, but it has been lost by crap writers and low budgets. I believe the talent is 'out there' for better work. But you can't get near...
Re: Jo Grant is back-or will be, soon!
I'd personally have Paul Cornell who is brilliant. Scream of the Shalka was a fine way for Dr Who to return. It was dark, gritty but modernized. Why couldn't he have been in charge

Frankly if the boys at BF were in charge and had a US style budget, it would be the greatest TV show of all time.

Paul would be an excellent choice, I agree. His Captain Britain series for Marvel showed what a brilliant writer he is when it comes to making tired old properties fresh and new and much more hard hitting and believable.Hourglass wrote:I'd personally have Paul Cornell who is brilliant. Some of the things RTD said about straight men would have been homophobic if a straight guy had said them about a gay man. Weird.
Oh, and Paul Cornell is made of win.

As a campaigner for the disabled and a former worker of a charity dealing with people on the autistic spectrum, I am very active in apposing such comments. Check GB, I have complained about it on there.
Tony you may find it amusing but members of the LGBT society (Lesbian Gay Transexual Bisexual society) at my uni found RTDs portrayal of gay characters as appalling and stereotypical.

Can't imagine why
Yes, 'ming mongs' is offensive. RTD does have the capacity to be quite un-PC sometimes. He made Martha and Mickey get married for no discernible reason other than the fact that they were both black.

Ah yes, i remember joining two different LGB societies at uni too... both full of bolshevik scum.
I'm glad sites like the various -chans are bringing in what i like to call "post political correctness", as in it's not so much what you say as the intent with which it is said. Brave, forward-thinking campaigners such as the band The Macc Lads started it off in the 80's but it will probably take until the 30's or 40's before the rest of society catches up.

Well calling them Ming Mongs was clearly a referal to their OTT behavour, suggesting they act like mad people. The "comedy sketch- we havent the ming mongs" excuse doesnt work in the context he used the phrase in. In other words a direct link to the fans and mentally ill people was made, so in this case RTD is still guilty of insulting the disabled community.
Sorry I just cant let this rest. He got away with an appalling insult, and at his level of responsibility and publicity (particularly with kids) its doesnt set a good example and he should know better.

It just goes to show that all this racism, prejudice and general hatred is rife in society today - just as it always has been and, sadly, always will be. It's the way we're made...
Re: Jo Grant is back-or will be, soon!
...moreover, when we all realise that, maybe we can do something about it. I'm always warey of people who say, "Well, I'm not racist - but...". I think everybody is everything. We're all to blame. Jesus, Ghandi and Lennon all had a really good idea - "why don't we all just get on?". But look what happened to those guys...
Re: Jo Grant is back-or will be, soon!
All just getting on is not, I fear, a natural characteristic for humans. We're driven by an instinctive need to be better off than the next guy.GBF wrote:...moreover, when we all realise that, maybe we can do something about it.
