This is why I love Lois and Clark
I think this may sum up what I love about Superman in general, and L&C in particular:
http://www.cbr.com/dean-cain-reveals-the-key-to-playing-superman-or-supergirl/
“Kindness. First and foremost, it’s kindness.” he told Moviefone. “You’re the most powerful being on Earth, or one of the most powerful beings on Earth, and you have to have a kindness, an ability to relate to everyone, and that’s what Superman or Supergirl does.”
“They say the ‘S’ means ‘hope,’ and that’s a great thing, but Superman is always kind,” he continued. “Obviously, if he’s fighting a foe, he’ll fight him until he’s got him beat, but then he would pick him up. It’s been tougher with the latest incarnations, but I think kindness is about the most important thing,” the actor added.

I haven't really thought about that show in years, but I used to watch it religiously. I was really pleased when Cain and Hatcher turned up on Supergirl!

This is SO TRUE! Without it, he'd just be a tyrant.

I own the first season of Supergirl, but I haven't watched it yet. I'm so behind on everything.
I have always loved L&C, partly because it's Superman and partly because it (purposefully IIRC) reminds me of Moonlighting. I still watch it once in a while.

I totally agree. His kindness, his caring about EVERYone has always been my favorite part of the character.

Supes pretty much embodies family values. It's why he works so well as a married man, unlike certain other characters.

I would entirely agree. I like the Bronze Age version, where he "couldn't" let himself get too involved, but him being married makes more sense. Then again, I never understood the reasons why people hated the marriage anyway.

The same reason as always. People dislike change.Mbast1 wrote:tony ingram wrote:It's why he works so well as a married man, unlike certain other characters.

To some extent, I see that. Things change, especially comics, that much I've seen, so hating change for change's sake sounds exhausting. But, I can definitely see not liking specific change, in that if you like a book as it is, change may result in something you don't like.
That said, I saw a lot of people who seemed to hate it for reasons that I didn't get. It made the character boring, they didn't like Lois, and so on. No clue.

Like he wasn't boring before the marriage? Bronze Age Superman frequently may as well have been a cardboard cut-out!

Marriage, in my opinion, makes a character more interesting, because they have to think about and relate to another person all the time. But that other person can also offer them new resources and connections.
For some people (dunno if Mike's ever heard of the 2000 AD characters SinDex) life's better as a pair.

I agree. I think marriage, and any long-term relationship, shapes you into a better person for those very reasons.

I bought a copy of the first volume of that book on Tony's recommendation. Haven't read it, yet, too much else to read.

I never thought so. That's my default version. Then again, I read them as a kid and it's likely I only remember the stand-out moments and stories. Plenty of bad ones.

Are you still reading Superman, incidentally? The current stuff?

I did read some of the Reborn stuff, but I'm still mostly keeping to my DC ban. Anything good?

Re: This is why I love Lois and Clark
I've been dipping my toes into DC since Rebirth, mostly due to an indulgent comic shop owner who doesn't mind me treating the place like a library, but I haven't been keeping up with Superman specifically, though I keep hearing it's gotten better. I gather the pre-Nu52 Superman is now firmly established as the "real" one and everyone has forgotten the Nu52 version...

More or less. It seems that that Superman was "split in two" (yes, echoes of red and blue) and that they re-merged. The old version seems to take precedence, though in interviews it was said they kept parts of the new version also.
I just am still not liking that this seems to be all about using Watchmen. Vindictive, petty and bs, in that Moore has repeatedly said he was told they wouldn't use the characters like that. So, still no DC for me.

Are any of the people who made that promise to him still actually working for DC?

No idea, but it seems pretty petty to not honor it.

I don't think honour as a concept really exists in the world of big business.

I think that is the best comics related news story of the year, so far.

I know, I know. And that is a deep flaw, I think.

Honour isn't lucrative.

But the thing is, it could be, in the long run. Wouldn't you be willing to take more risks on someone you know will honor their commitments?
