Golden Age Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson)
First appearance of his feature: More Fun Comics #55, cover-dated May 1940 (and according to the GCD, on-sale date of March 29th, 1940).
However, it wasn't until the following issue (#56) that Fate would first appear on the cover.
Doctor Fate, like fellow More Fun Comics feature The Spectre, was a founding member of the Justice Society of America.
For More Fun Comics #72, cover-dated October 1941 (on-sale date of August 19th, 1941), Doctor Fate began wearing a half-helmet.
The half-helmet was first seen in his JSA appearances starting in All-Star Comics #8 (December 1941-January 1942), the same issue where Dr. Mid-Nite and Starman join the group.
Doctor Fate's last Golden Age appearance as a member of the JSA was in All-Star Comics #21 (Summer 1944), though his last appearance on the cover of that title was the previous issue.
The final appearance of his feature in the pages of More Fun Comics was in issue #98 (cover-dated July–August 1944).

One of my favorite characters, thanks for posting this. There's a 3-issue mini-series (taken from backups in the Flash) well worth finding from the 1980s.

Well, issues #2 and #3 had the back-up stories from The Flash.Mbast1 wrote:One of my favorite characters, thanks for posting this. The first issue of this series reprinted the Doctor Fate story that was originally in 1rst Issue Special #9 and the Doctor Fate origin story from DC Special Series #10, which also had an origin for Black Canary (back in the days before there was more than one Black Canary).
